[No international shipping!] DevBoard eZ8 for $14
« on: August 07, 2013, 04:02:01 am »
I just got my order refunded:

Sorry product are sold only within the philippines. We can'i shipped internationally because of high cost
So there is that...

Spoiler For Spoiler:
To get into eZ8 programming you either need to build your own development board or buy one. The problem with making your own is that you need a Zilog USB smartCable to be able to use the debug features in the IDE (you program the chip via the debug interface, so you really need it) The kit is only $10 more expensive than the cable by itself which generally goes for about $30. I wound up getting the Devkit with the cable included for $40. A week or two later I found out about this little board that allows you to use a regular usb cable. This neat little devboard has the same layout as an arduino, but instead of an ATmega it has an Z8F042A encore! XP on it.

The exact chip number is not listed on the website, but it is a 28 pin IC. It has 23 I/O pins, 4KB of flash, 1KB of ram.

Yours has a lot more features though. Yours havs leds, test buttons, a prototyping area, 60 I/O's, 64K of flash, 4K of memory, IR tranceiver etc. This board is for people who like to try their hands on the cpu and want to check if Z8 asm is for them.

Are there so far any other ways to program the eZ8 than assembling? Maybe a C-compiler for it?

Keoni29: That's good to know! I really didn't bother to look at the features, when you told me about it, I just bought it :D I think the cable might be of use for other stuff as well if different adapters were created for it. By the weekend it should be here.

Yes there is a C compiler for it, but I have not tried that yet. The IDE has a C compiler and an Assembler.

Edit: Yes the cable can be used for all Zilog cpu that use the same debug interface such as the eZ80

I got my z8 today! I have to say, its definitely worth $50 for the kit. From the packaging alone you can tell they put a lot of work into it. This thing has about 100 pins sticking out of it and a prototyping area but it looks like surface mount only. I'll get started with it this weekend.

Actually that is more than 100 pins. You are gonna need some female headers to work with it since it's all male and you don't want to solder directly to the board. On the CD there should be a pinout. Otherwise check zilog's website for a datasheet of the kit.

Yeah. We might try to release a pcb for an eZ8 devboard ourself so you can just solder your own eZ8 on there.
