Canada- Get ready for less Internets
« on: February 01, 2011, 04:37:15 pm »
Well, I dont know if this has been posted around here yet, or if anyone has heard. But Canada ISP's are going to start charging *alot* more per byte of data and lower the bandwith caps trying to gouge the consumers to pay more money for less internet.
I also found this picture more than fitting. Kinda puts it into perspective.. http://fukung.net/v/37735/afaa25c231739b1aa96cb7628ec8a2d0.png
You can read more about it here:

I hope this gets stopped. If you live in Canada, sign the first link.

I really hate monopolists forcing their own crappy prices on the market. That is just greedy. I don't know if this is happening on certain regions or most Canada because it is one of the biggest countries.
The best thing that could happen are companies getting into the market with competitive prices. That is a must for having a fair price and quality of service. But it may be impossible if the monopolists detain all the network infrastructures and rent in such a prize that turns impossible for other companies be competitive.

Offtopic: I also don't like prices too much artificially lower than their real costs because generally it can have very negative impact on nature (except for truly nature-friendly materials of course).
But economy is run by many greedy people, so what could you expect? I hope that there are enough reasonable persons to balance it soon enough for the human and Earth life future.

Yeah I'm upset about this too, I don't think it's going to last that long though with the public protest and all :/
It's a good thing I don't pay for my internet though yet :P

That diagram is insane. It would be cheaper to ship hard drives across the world, than to pay for the internet stuff.  Any info on the GB cap limits?

Yeah, the Canadians here are mainly DJ, Eeems and myself.

This sucks. Like the government and big companies never have enough money. This is just plain silly. I'm not effing paying more for less.

Why Canada don't do like Sweden and/or Japan and making anti-monopoly laws so everyone would be free to be their own ISP and offer unlimited 10Gbps?

If it continue, we're going on our way of becoming the worst country ever.

See, I have mixed feelings about anti-monopoly laws.  Half of my is screaming no government intervention in the market, and the other half is screaming way to fail ISP companies.  I'm thinking if people petition like they are doing, and don't buy internet, then they still have the power to do it and shouldn't make the laws.  In economics, you make decisions with where you spend your money.  Granted, it would be difficult for me to go without internet.  Hence why they can still charge ridiculous prices.

This sucks. I remember hearing about this a year ago but I wasn't sure if they would do it. 3 years ago the other Internet plan I had went from unlimited to 100 GB/month. I wonder what it will be next.

What sucks is that there are only two major ISPs here. Then there's Telus and a few resellers, but what if resellers starts to charge more too? This is not to mention they're not always as reliable.

Well, Vidéotron recently increased their bandwidth limit, but ISPs still makes more money by not being unlimited. Currently, this is what they do: "The usage exceeding the monthly capacity limit of X gigabytes (download and upload combined) will be billed at $Y per gigabyte used up to a maximum of $Z per month." Which is kinda nice if you have a low Z.

I've considered others ISPs, but Telus doesn't come at my home and for the other resellers, even thought they are unlimited, well my mom doesn't really trust them... And the resellers are dependent of Bell, since Bell own the lines, and they just could incrase all their location prices anytime to make more profit and to limit the resellers.

On a side note, this could be better :P

heh, a little intervention is healthy, as the Canadian economy's stability has shown ;)

Or North Korea/China. :P

I personally don't mind if they charge for using above 100 GB because I rarely get over that limit but if they drop my bandwidth cap to 20 GB or worse, puts it at 0 GB and charge for any MB of data transfer, it's really gonna be hectic. X.x
