If I buy a Wii in 3 months for some reason, I of course won't have access to official Nintendo WFC servers but will I have access to those ones even if I didn't register when the official ones where online ?
Actually that's wrong. Nintendo licenses are coming to the U now and the sales are picking up again. The reason why it started so slow is due to really poor marketing. People were apparently not even aware that there was a new console. When it was first announced, most thought it was just a new Wii accessory, and the name has to be blamed for that.

The point of registering now is keeping your current Friend Code and data from Nintendo's servers.

So far, we got a remake of an existing Zelda game and we will get Hyrule Warriors, which isn't even close to Zelda gameplay. When the NES and SNES came out in USA, we got brand new Zelda games just one year later.
