Title: I need your processor!

Haha not really. But here is what I do need. I was wondering if anyone could help me by letting me send them some programs that they run on there computer, and then send me the debugging report that the program outputs. Really simple and probably only takes about 2 seconds. Either way this is to further my research in optimizing code for different CPUs.

Minimum requirements:
* More than 128 MB of RAM

What types of processors I am looking for:
* 500 Mhz-1 Ghz Single Core processor
* 2-3 Ghz Single Core processor
* 1-3 Ghz Dual Core processor(AMD or Intel)
* 1-3 Ghz Quad Core processor

I would also like to know the amount of cache that your processor has. So please everyone post their computer specifications. The things listed above are the main things I am looking for, but I will accept any processor.

x86-64 (EM64T) Core 2 Duo E6420 Conroe @ 2.7GHz, 32KB+32KB L1 cache, 4MB shared L2 cache, 65nm transistor size, FSB @ 1333MHz, 8.0X multiplier.

other specs:
evga nforce 680i TR SLI
geforce 8800GTS 320MB @ 585MHz
2*1GB DDR2 @ 850MHz 5-4-5-12

Both my operating systems are 64-bit (xp and sabayon) so make sure you fully utilize that. :)

Alright spengo I would definitely like to test on your system. Is that alright? No programs will crash you system, trust me.

Okay, I been thinking about bumping that up to 3.0GHz since there are multiple reviews on newegg with claims of 3.2+GHz on the stock cooler. I don't think I'd want to go quite *that* far, but 3.0 would be nice. I should invest in a better HSF sometime.

When you buy a processor you should always know the cache. Also DJ_Omnimaga o.o could you post another specification post of just the things I need to know, plus I couldn't really understand that post...

how would I do that? because I posted some of what I've found in the system info, maybe cache is here too and I missed it

but its all in french

EDIT: all it gives me about processor is Processeur   x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~2926 Mhz


i tried a search on "cache" and it couldn't find any results :(

Btw i didnt bought the processor alone, because i know nothing about comp building and I bought the pc premade. Plus with all the hidden and non hidden tax over here it's as expensive (if not more) to build your own pc than buy a prebuild one

You can't find out the cache without getting it directly when buying I think. It isn't anything that Windows can tell you.

Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 sounds like Pentium 4 if I am not much mistaken. That would be 12KB+16KB L1 cache and 1MB L2 cache if memory serves correctly.

@Liazon: No this is my experiment with the difference between optimizing C for a dual-core/quad-core processor and optimizing it for a single core. I want to put the ideas that I have gained from STI. The Basics:

Test one piece of code(optimized for dual-core) on a dual-core processor.
Test the same piece of code(optimized for dual-core) on a single-core processor.
Test one piece of code(optimized for single-core) on a dual-core processor.
Test the same piece of code(optimized for single-core) on a single-core processor.

My hypothesis is that the respective pieces of code will run faster on the computer they were made for. This is moderately dependent though on how the dual-core handles scheduling. I want to see if it is worth my time making separate builds for a single-core and dual-core processor. According to all the companies out there(Blitz Games, Insomniac Games, Epic Games, etc.) it is crucial to optimize for the CELL, but I want to know if the same applies for a market CPU.

I hope that all cleared everything up for you. ;)

AMD Athlon XP+ 1700 (1.47GHz) w/ 256 ram (can't remember the cache size though :( )

do u think you can make the game run at same speed on all computers, for example if it was made for a 500 MHz comp? I know some games like Doom does, but Duke Nukem 3D run slower on new computers than old ones

I don't think there should be any issue of that sort unless you are attempting to emulate another OS DJ. Maybe if you had a really slow XP PC trying to run a high-end MSDOS game with DOSbox I could see it running slow, but otherwise should be fine. At any rate, you can always try it. Get the Duke Nukem demo and give it a spin. =)

DJ_Omnimaga: I am not sure. It should be generally faster on a regular single core CPU, but loads faster on a dual-core CPU.
