Ipod Linux!
« on: September 15, 2007, 03:32:00 am »
I got bored the other day and started messing around with my broken ipod photo (also known as 4th gen color ipod, or something to that effect) and after asking questions on an awesome site (I recommend this to everyone with an ipod, more on this later...) I got my ipod photo restored to former glory!

Now for the good part:

Then, after being bored with a 30GB ipod with only 2GB of music I can stand to listen to, I installed ipod linux! (info at www.ipodlinux.org ) Cut and past the link, I'm too lazy right now to link it for ya...  :Ptongue.gif  Anyway... I got it to play videos, gameboy games, (not game boy advance, not gameboy color, just gameboy...) and it still plays music... Anybody got any ideas of what I should do with the *other* 20GB?

Also, there is a video that's popular around my area called "Charlie the unicorn". My name just happens to be Charlie, and everyone seems to think I'm a unicorn... Also, I can't seem to download the file... would someone do me a big favor and download that movie off youtube and email it to me? (not the link, it won't work...) It's really easy, just do a google search on "download Youtube video" (no quotes) and pick a link that suits you best. My email is
M e c h a T e c h 8 4 @ y a h o o . c o m

I mostly posted this to share my excitement, but I will do my best to answer any questions if someone has any...

Thanks! --Mecha

How's the GBC emulator?  Because Rockbox's emu gets a horrible framerate...

Mecha, make it so that bots won't be able to read your email. For example, change the @ symbol to (at) and change the . symbol to (dot).

oops... my bad... thanks!

As for the emulator, currently I only have one rom working, and I only have gameboy games working... (not color or advance, just gameboy) It works great for me, I don't remember if it is faster or slower than the original, it's been a while since I played it on the comp....

This would be the only reason for me to get an Ipod.

I still can't get rockbox to load... did you use a loader with a menu interface? like the current loader 2.4? Or did you just use keypresses to load stuff?

Anyone ever got Music Player Daemon working? (I can't figure that out either, and rockbox looked easier... so much for that!)

The only reason I have an ipod is because my grandparents bought me my shuffle (now broken....) then they got my sister a nano, felt sorry for me and got me a nano as well, then my granddad's ipod photo broke, so I got that as well. Sweet deal, huh?

I forgot to post the link to the site that I used to fix my ipod: the url is:

They are awesome!

Just thought this was relevant.

'Apple Cuts Off Linux iPod Users'
http://apple.slashdot.org/apple/07/09/14/1831236.shtml

[EDIT]

And and some people were talking about alternative OS's above. This is one of the comments from that article:

QUOTE
They've also made it currently impossible to use alternate OSes on the iPod by encrypting the firmware on the 2nd gen Nano and all subsequent iPods, which is a much more difficult obstacle to overcome. I'm surprised there isn't as much of an uproar about this on Slashdot.

And it links to: http://ipodlinux.org/Project_Status

And as for my personal opinion, I mostly agree with this comment:

QUOTE
MP3 players were out long before the iPod ever came around, but nobody really cared. To the extent that people did listen to music, they'd just keep doing it on a walk/discman or the like. An MP3 player was just a new gadget that only some cared about. Well, Apple changed that, they sold the style, they made it cool. It became a fashion accessory. Sorority girls started to carry them not even because they cared about listening to music, but because it was fashionable to do so.

Apple convinced everyone that a music player was something you needed to have, and their's was the stylish one to get. As such, they managed to grab the majority of the market.

Well, once you've got something like that going, inertia will carry you a long way. People don't like change, once they get something that works for them they don't change it without reason. As such you get people sold on iPods and when they need a new player, they just go and get another one, they don't really look at alternates. It works for them, why change?

Finally you should know that individuality isn't something most hold in a high regard. Even most of the "non-conformist" types simply work real hard to conform with their given non-conformist group. It's rare to find people who simply don't give a [fornication] and do their own thing regardless of society.

Marketing strategy and inertia.
