Dennis Ritchie, creator of C and developer of UNIX dead
« on: October 13, 2011, 03:50:39 am »
From wikipedia:
Quote
Ritchie was best known as the creator of the C programming language and a key developer of the Unix operating system, and as co-author of the definitive book on C, The C Programming Language, commonly referred to as K&R (in reference to the authors Kernighan and Ritchie).
Ritchie's invention of C and his role in the development of Unix alongside Ken Thompson has placed him as an important pioneer of modern computing. The C language is still widely used today in application and operating system development, and its influence is seen in most modern programming languages. Unix has also been influential, establishing concepts and principles that are now well-established precepts of computing.

He died a few days ago, at age 70. We truly have lost a great man :(

Two influential persons in the domain of computering died, rest in peace Dennis Ritchie and Steve Jobs. The former gave the bases of modern computing with C and UNIX while the latter also did it with Apple computers.

Sadly I did not know much about him, since I never got into Unix much and I'm not very tech-savy, but I,m sad to hear :(

Come to think, Dennis Ritchie influenced directly or indirectly pretty much every well-known programming languages and every operating system, as a lot of programming languages, if not all, has been influenced by C and pretty much every main operating system on the market are either Windows (whose NT branch has some UNIX-influenced precepts implemented) or UNIX-like, if not a handful of them has been written in C/C++.

Except BASIC, which Microsoft then corrupted with C-like concepts in Visual BASIC.
