DS Troubles - HELP
«
on:
January 05, 2013, 01:12:41 pm »
Has anybody ever had a DS where the battery went bad? I was wondering what the symptoms were as the battery degraded... did it just stop working or were there other symptoms before it finally bit the dust? It acted weird for a while... like game freezing up... now it just doesn't turn on.
I have an unhappy kid right now.
Any thoughts or ideas?
Thanks!

Have you tried recharging the battery?

that seems like it would be related to something else; i thought it just shut itself off when the battery got too low. does it do the same things if you start it up while it's plugged in?
oh, and what version is it?

I don't know Ranman, sounds like it might just be dead. I'm a bit surprised actually, because Nintendo portables are pretty durable. I've had my DS lite for a really long time, and it's seen a ton of usage. Aside from the trigger buttons not functioning it works like new.

I'M unsure myself, but the symptoms my old DS battery showed when it was low was just suddenly shutting down. No game froze up or anything.

DSes are really durable, but somehow my sister's DS Lite's firmware corrupted. She hadn't even hacked it too

It is a DS Lite. It appears to be charged. Usually if it is low on charge the orange light comes on and blinks. Right now when I power it on, the green light comes on but the screens are black (with or without a cartridge in).
As the unit degraded but before the screens went solid black, the screens would light up and show the Nintendo screen -- even without a cartridge. With a cartridge plugged in, the game would play for a few seconds then freeze up. But now... nothing but the green and orange lights work.
Thanks for all the comments. I'm hoping it is just a bad battery.

I'm not entierly sure, but I'd guess batteries for this aren't exactly cheap.

yeah, at this point, what with their slowly being overshadowed by the 3ds, it would probably be cheaper to get another one

Yeah I agree with Shmibs, but be careful about where you buy your 3DS. Last week, I went to Archambault and they still had a Nintendo DS available for $139.99. Their 3DS was $169.99 and their 3DS XL was $199.99. I'm betting you could find both a GBA SP (don't get the original GBA, because you'll destroy your eyes) and an original DS used for even cheaper (and you can forget the GBA SP if you don't need GBA emulation) or simply go for a DSi or 3DS. I don't know how much a battery will cost but I bet it's pretty expensive and getting the DS repaired is probably more expensive than getting a new console.
