OUYA - The Future of Console Gaming
« on: July 12, 2012, 11:09:46 am »
I found this earlier today.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ouya/ouya-a-new-kind-of-video-game-console

What it basically is, is a high end console that allows for anyone to develop for it. It is completely open to hacking, modding, development, and it even gives individuals the ability to make money from their work. The kickstarter started about two days ago, and within 7 hours they met their goal of $975,000... Now they're at $3,985,822 as of this posting. :P

It certainly is a promising console. Just thought I'd share this here. :D

Here is their developers forum.

Spoiler For IMPORTANT NEWS!:
Late last night, Quebec was invaded by a group calling themselves, "Omnimaga". Not much is known about these mysterious people except that they all carried calculators of some kind and they all seemed to converge on one house in particular. Experts estimate that the combined power of their fabled calculators is greater than all the worlds super computers put together. The group seems to be holding out in the home of a certain DJ_O, who the Omnimagians claim to be their founder. Such power has put the world at a standstill with everyone waiting to see what the Omnimagians will do...

Wait... This just in, the Omnimagians have sent the UN a list of demands that must be met or else the world will be "submitted to the wrath of Netham45's Lobster Army". Such demands include >9001 crates of peanuts, sacrificial blue lobsters, and a wide assortment of cherry flavored items. With such computing power stored in the hands of such people, we can only hope these demands are met.

In the wake of these events, we can only ask, Why? Why do these people make these demands, what caused them to gather, and what are their future plans...

It looks like an Android tablet without the portability.

Also note that games are tied to the store and can ONLY be sold through there. As far as I can tell, this is basically Steam with a dedicated, cheap, console and fewer games.

Not to mention that the CPU in here is woefully underpowered for most any modern games (sure it's a quadcore, but it's an ARM, they're not exactly powerhouses), and 8GB of space is laughable when an 8GB jumpdrive costs $8 retail. Put some more RAM in it too, RAM is cheap as dirt. I got 16GB for $65 a couple weeks ago, surely they could put at least 4GB in it.

This would hardly rival the PS2 in capabilities, and with a used Xbox 360 going for $20 more, having a full library along with the backing of a major company, and being a developed platform, they have no chance.

It's a shame: with better hardware, this might have had a shot. As it is, I'd say quite a few Kickstarter donors just wasted their money.
See you, space cowboy...

I don't know, there's quite a developer community already forming around it, including developers like Mojang. The kickstarter was actually announced yesterday, I learned, so I don't think the hardware is set in stone just yet. Beyond that, they're not really looking towards competing with modern consoles, but allowing developers to create games for consoles easier, without having to purchase licenses and SDK's.

Since any software could be deployed from the computer, there could be alternate online services that could distribute games. Also, all games are "Free to Play" as they put it, games may either offer a free demo, or entirely be free with additional content one could purchase.

Well, it seems pretty interesting, might buy one. It may not be as powerful as the main 3 consoles, but at least it has the idea of openness, everything is rooted and you can make your own game for free while supporting indie game devs.

Interesting, but I think it won't go far if it has annoying limitations such as slow CPU or not being able to sell games in whatever store companies want.

Since any software could be deployed from the computer, there could be alternate online services that could distribute games. Also, all games are "Free to Play" as they put it, games may either offer a free demo, or entirely be free with additional content one could purchase.

Mojang said they would develop for it if it was a decent platform. Also, they don't really count, they already have Android ports of Minecraft out there.

Their store is far too restrictive to the seller, too. They'll never get a decent userbase if their store is so regulated. It doesn't really matter if it's free to develop and you can sideload any application you want if the main channels for content distribution suck. The open-source end user friendly philosophy is nice, but it's going to damage the platform more than help it.

There's also the fact that unless this gets some serious backing (Epic games, Sega, or the likes releasing games for it) it won't have any major titles coming out, and therefore won't be worth it to anyone.

If you like my work: why not give me an internet?

From what I understand so far, it would be via the internet. I would assume that you could also have games and apps available from a computer or external storage.

That would be problematic for people such as Xeda112358 who got no regular Internet access at home. I hate how some companies and software developers always assume that every single people on the earth who got computer access also got full Internet access (eg when you buy a software, now the readme is no longer on the CD, but rather online somewhere)

I agree. There will most likely be a way for users to load programs through a USB or computer connection though.

As of writing this, the kickstarter just passed the $6,000,000 mark XD
