Scanning cellphone screen gives grayscale result
« on: September 25, 2012, 10:13:49 pm »
I noticed something strange when using my HP scanner. I'm not sure if it's something common with all LCDs but I couldn't find anything about it on Google. I was experimenting a bit and decided to try to scan my mobile phone while it's turned ON. For odd reasons, in the scanned pic, the mobile device LCD was grayscale. I tried at various brightness levels: same result.

Can anyone explain this phenomenon? O.O

It might have to do with the fact that the light exiting the screen is polarized.

[EDIT] I just noticed the scanlines in the images too, I think the polarization idea is making more sense now.

Is his screen inverted due to a custom theme or did scanning it really turn it like that?

If you have access to one, a polarizing filter for a camera may give you the same result in real time by looking through the filter and rotating it to find the point where the colors change.

Reminds me, I have those RealD glasses they give you at 3D movies, when I put them in front of my computer screen, horizontally the glasses are yellow, but vertically they're blue. It's related?
