The most awesome retro sounds
« on: October 09, 2014, 02:14:02 am »
So I was watching an anime yesterday and suddenly the dial-up internet sound happened. I found that quite cool and it got me wondering, what do you think are the most awesome retro sounds? Post the sound you think is the most awesome retro sound (effect) ever!
I'm not a nerd but I pretend:

Personally it's NES all the way, since I grew up with it. Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and C64 sounds would definitively be close for me. SNES too depending of the sounds. A lot of SNES music doesn't sound that retro due to not being chiptune but some sound effects in games are old school classics definitively.

Other ones that come to mind are the Windows 95 intro sound, the beep that older computers did when booting, typewriter sounds, floppy disk drives and perhaps the sound that some old computers did when loading stuff, such as the Atari 8-bit. Not sure if audio/videotapes being played at high speed count, though.

I have a fondness for the sound my 80s electric typewriter makes when it initializes. I also like the smell of it's old electronics + grease. :) Also the sound of old hard drives - when I was a kid I slept with a '91 laptop running near me, so it brings back good memories.
+1 for dialup sounds too!
You should know, I am a Christian.

I think some newer ones don't. But even now the beep is often slightly different, sometimes with more treble or something. Back then it totally sounded like some NES or Atari 2600 beep and every computer sounded identical IIRC.

As for the dial-up sound, the local Subway restaurant at the shopping mall had it when I paid via debit card, but since they did renovations last year or so I no longer heard it after the payment gets processed.

Yep, the dialup sound, anything falling in the category of chiptunes, and also this distinctive noise old, bulky laptops make with the hard drives. My netbook still does that. Oh, and the ICQ noise.

What was the ICQ noise? I can't seem to remember, but again I used Trillian for ICQ and had sound notifications disabled. The only thing I remember ICQ for is the extreme amount of spam you would receive.

This one. It's my childhood (although I never really used it myself), along with IE5, KaZaA, dial-up and Microsoft Excel.

Ah ok, I never heard it. But again  I started using ICQ in 2006 or so and never used the official client. As for IE5, KaZaA and stuff I never heard them either because in hi school the computers had no sound and it was against the rules to use headphones in classes (in one school you could get banned from the computer lab for the rest of the school year for doing so, same if you visited adult sites)
