Types of USB Flash Drives
« on: September 11, 2011, 03:52:49 pm »
I've been using the same 8gig flash drive since my freshman year, and it's starting to wear out.  My old msd8x drive is starting to fail as well, having been used for various things for ~5 years.
So, I've been looking to replace them.

I'm wondering what good, dependable types of flash drives are out there, and have a reasonable price tag.  I've been using Sandisk Cruzers but maybe there's something better I haven't heard of yet...?
I'm looking for one 8gig (for general purposes) and one <2gig (msd8x, so something from this list unless that's far out of date)

TIA ;D

I always liked Kingstons, for my 2 cents.

Kingstons haven't fared well for me (one wore out and another got lost), but I'm guessing that's just sheer luck. Cruzers are nice and the perfect size/shape IMO.

My PNYs gone bad in less than a year so I would not recommend those.

I've had a few Kingstons for 2+ years with no problems. All of them have gone through the washing machine at least three times with no ill effects. However, if you want a really cool USB, try a Prizm :P

Just a random note from personal experience. If you want your flash drives to continue to work, don't touch the pins on the micro processor (this includes with another object.) The reason I say this is because your own personal static might short out the processor.

(As stupid and unrealistic as that sounds, I've done it when I was counting the pins.)

You can build a statue out of either 1'x1' blocks or 12'x12' blocks. The 1'x1' blocks will take a lot longer, but the final product is worth it.
