Using Technology to Pick up Chicks (or the male equivalent)
« on: February 17, 2011, 01:20:01 pm »
How many of y'all have ever used your knowledge of technology and programming as an ice-breaker with a hot girl? Or hot guy, if you're not into girls? It doesn't have to be for romantic reasons, either. I have used my knowledge of technology and programming as a conversation topic numerous times, none of which were romantically driven.
I'm asking mostly out of curiosity, but also because I have been offered a "job" of sorts to tutor a woman old enough to be my grandmother (at least, she claims to be a certain age, which, if true, would make her about as old as my grandmother) how to use a computer for her classes.

I have not used it as an icebreaker and I don't really know why... Well, I mean I have tried impressing a guy with what I know, but it doesn't help that it is usually after we have known each other and they find out pretty quickly that I don't actually know much :p... as a regular icebreaker (as in not for romantic reasons) then yes, I have used my knowledge of calcs...

"Check out my TI-89... it has a gameboy emulator! Yep, that's pokemon red version! Oh, this? This is my 84! Yeah, I made this program... I'm working on an RPG... uh-huh! Yes! oh, okay! What time?"

Okay, before I get off topic... >_>

(the "What time?" was actually in response to "so can you get that on my calculator? :P)

Whenever a girl knows I'm into 'computing' (as they say), they run away (not literally, methaforically).

Also, from personal experience, never mention you program calculators (not in Europe, at least), if you say are into computer programming, you look less of a nerd.

But yeah, I can't hide that I'm a programmer most of the times, some girls might even say 'That's cool'.

I generally use the games that I have or am making for the calculator as an icebreaker. "Hey, I have Super Mario", or "Hey, I'm making a Zelda clone", to the usual response of "Cool. Can you hook me up with that?" from guys or "That is awesome. I want that game." from girls. Once I talk to them regularly, regardless of gender, I usually avoid the topic of programming, unless the girl happens to be somewhat technology-minded. There are a few of my friends (girls) who I have taught or am teaching TI-Basic, meanwhile, I'm whipping out Axe stuff and they're like "WTF". They are also members of my website and support my projects.

My life is sad. I don't even really try to talk to girls.  The only ones I talk to are these friends I've know since 6th grade, friends I'v known since kindergarten, and this random girl I sit next to in Business who gets bored easily.   :P
I have absolutely no way to pick up anyone, but no desire to either.

I don't use programming much as a conversation starter, but my name is pretty much synonymous for two things at my school: Trumpet/Band and Calcs. :)

I just impress people by making up shit like "I'm currently the 2nd best assembly programmer in the world, I'm competing against the best to claim his title atm" or "I'm in a programming contest with 100,000 entrants, and in the final round it's me and 5 other people competing to win TI's annual $1mil scholorship prize"

and since non-programmers can be gullible dipshits it always works and I'm considered the "smartest guy in school" :)

Argh, I can never get the girls to stay away most of the time :P

@Ashbad you dont need to make stuff up for that effect, just start describing pointers.

Im the only calc nerd at my school, and I dont really have a place on the ladder. More like a jet pack going up and down, talking to people. People dont mess with me, or something bad happens to them/their calc/their school login. (jk on that last bit :P)

Yeah same here. As for me, girls didn't care about programming and such things, so they weren't really impressed by my programming skills in school. They prefered someone who prefer to go out regularly. :P

* Qwerty.55 officially doesn't program, not because he's embarrassed, but because he's known for other things, like "That guy who knows how to make strawberry scented explosives"

It only happened once...

EDIT: Joking about that being my reputation, although the story may or may not be true >_>
