Note, however, that today, you can get .com domains for $2 from time to time. :P

Actually you can be way longer (.info or even .travel or .museum if you can and use of subdomains, I think the domain as a whole must not exceed 256 chars).

Ah I see. I guess back then there were more limitations or something. Also Sorunome back then, a .com domain name costed between $9.99 and $29.99 per year, depending of where you got it.

That or the guy was only aware of the basic limitations. .info is pretty recent though, compared to .com who is as old as the Internet.

And I got a .com domain for $0.98 a year the first year once :P Then it would be the regular $10, .org domains are slightly cheaper (in the order of something like 40ยข). .info and .us are cheaper as well I think.

1and1 used to sell .com domain names for $7.99 yearly, but then they rose their prices to close to $10 or something. But in many occasions there or at other places I saw much cheaper offers. Certain domain names are far more expensive, though, such as .ga and .tv.

I think all the non-profit Internet commissions are short on money today. Even the W3C is seriously planning sponsored tags in the HTML6 draft that would allow companies to basically buy adspace in the structure of HTML.
