I believe I -1'ed a Quigibo post or two in his early days on the forums I believe. I think I did a few times with NecroF-_-ckk too and Drak. :P Text is a useful, but not the best way to communicate emotions. On top of that, different mentalities cause people to have different ways to say stuff. Language barrier won,t help either. I accidentally offended people too, in the past.

An example is that in France, posting ALL CAPS is considered as yelling. Because I frequent french forums a lot, I kinda have issues making the difference between emphasis and yelling on english forums, as on them, people use caps for both. In france they use bold or colors to put emphasis. Another example is how posting a lonely "..." or a "*facepalm*" on a forum or IRC is seen as embarrasing towards the person it's directed at, while for some people, "..." simply means no comment and "*facepalm*" is simply showing a loss of patience. Even *shrugs* is considered as rude by some people. I think the worst has to be sarcasm, though. That's one thing that is hard to detect x.x

One cool thing with the rating system is how you can immediately change your vote afterward, tho, so if a post is misinterpreted you can revert or negate your change.

Of course, if you went spamming (outside randomness), trolling, impoliteness or dissing people hard work or posted very narrow minded comments on something, it's certain that could make the overall rating go down a lot, especially the two first :P.

I think Allynfolksjr and Noah dropped by 10 within a few minutes once. The first for trolling and totally pointless posts, and the second for spamming (altough he apologised later)

I also dropped I believe before.

i see...
thats very interesting actually...

as you can see... i try to express my emotions with smilies at the end of sentences so i dont confuse people...
my first language is English so there should be any problem there... although as you can see i use "..." alot....

though its different from what you just said... i use them as pauses when i am thinking and typing... :)

and yes.. i do also put "..." separate (not connected to the previous word) meaning i am frustrated or at a lost of patience lol

p.s. thank goodness i dont put "..." after everything for an actual english essay lol... i wonder what my teacher would think :P
i simply replace them with ","

but ya... there is a little story about myself for ya! :D

p.s. you play supreme commander right? have you seen this? http://www.youtube.com/user/asdrubaelvect29900

Yeah for "..." I mostly meant like for example:

<user1> Hi, how do I display a sprite with Ion routines?
<anotheruser> ...

user1 might go as far as interpreting it as "<anotheruser> idiot" x.x

And Nah I don't play Supreme COmmander (not yet actually, not really a big gamer x.x), but I like some Starcraft game from time to time. I know Hot_Dog loves Supreme Commander a lot, though.

lol... supreme commander is one of the best RTS out there... but it isn't that popular for some reason...

as for starcraft... you can already tell that how i like it from my avatar...

i am actually the leader of clan starcraft at the site www.d3jsp.org (online gaming community with over 10000 users...)

but ya... supreme commander 2 just came out... to my opinion... its not nearly as good as the first one... sure they upgraded the graphics abit... but it sucks now... everything looks like toys lol....

if you are going to start i suggest you just stick with SC1... but with some mods of course... such as the youtube link i sent you... he is basically the master Supreme commander modifier...
(he didn't like supreme commander 2 either lol)

I think the reason why Supreme 1 was not too popular is because of the minimum computer specs being too high at the time of its release. Supreme 2 was optimized in a way that even my old computer could probably run it (which couldn't run the first). The Xbox 360 version was horrible because with many units on screen you got 4 frames per second. Supreme 2 is supposed to fix the intense ressources requirements while still improving the graphics, but I cannot really judge the rest. Maybe it will turn out good in the end, but I would still like to play the first on the PC when I feel like gaming more.

I am not that great at Starcraft personally, so I would probably not join a clan, altough there's another reason for that, being that in general, the majority of SC hardcore gamers I met are far from being the nicest person in the world. It can be seen on Youtube, where even on the best gameplays ever, almost every comment is negative. Had I ran a SC forum the same way I run Omnimaga, about 90% of the users joining would probably get banned. x.x

Usually I advocate respect and if people cannot respect me and decide to take a game way too seriously, I won't respect them either. Example: if I am in a 3v3 game and near the end one of our own teamates start saying we both suck, I BS him (even if I may lose the game). In some occasions, the teamate didn't even play as good as us and had a very small limited base. There's also people who accuse me of hacking when they lose against me. :P

Fortunately iCCup is moderated so you can report these people if you got a replay now. Otherwise eventually we'll have our own Omnimaga server being public. We just need to fix a few things before giving away the registry modifiers (I think Netham45 wants to fix the thing so it works with Warcraft 3 too instead of just Starcraft and Warcraft 2)

Thanks for the Supreme Commander link by the way

Unless you do something really stupid, your respect normally will go up.  I'd say it will drop down slightly if you disrespect someone.  Generally, if you post positive comments, you'll end up with positive respect. :)

Keep in mind excessive spam could drag respect down too, as I said :P

I just checked Drak and even if he did not disrespect people on the forums more than once (if he even did at all), he still had -3 x.x

True x.x

I personally find it pointless to try to mock others or make them feel discouraged about contributing using their free time. Of course, unfortunately, there are people who find entertainment in this x.x. The best thing to do is keep these people away and focus on the good so it's easier to continue making awesome calculator programs.

Welcome here ExceL/Maize btw ^^

As Quigibo said you don,t have to take respect levels personally. Personally, though, knowing you are the same schoolhacker_hacker guy from ticalc.org, maybe some people got a bad impression of you due to some of your negative posts on their site (even though the staff work hard on it... altough I agree with you on the reviews part... where's my recent review of Netham45's screen inverter?), and your first intro post on Omnimaga mentionned the forum is a bit disorganized without any suggestions for improvements, so maybe people took this as unconstructive. Negative respect doesn't mean people hate you. Skuller972 had negative respect during his entire stay on the forums and we still enjoyed chatting with him regulary on IRC.

Keep in mind certain people also rate posts based on their personal opinion on the subject, and with english not being everyone's native language, misinterpreting can occur. Note that also people accidentally hit -1 instead of +1 because they are so close to each others, then won't notice.

Don't get angry at us for having negative respect. That would be the worst way to make it rise. The best way to make it rise is to contribute to the site. Every helpful posts and major project updates tend to help. Notice how high Quigibo respect went in so short amount of time.

If new members starts getting so worked up about the forum comment rating system I'll just disable it altogether. I don't understand why you take it so seriously. No one else here does, atm. At least it's better than the old reputation system we had that was not tied to posts or Youtube comment system where you can rate someone's comment every 6 hours.

If everyone started leaving Youtube the second one of their comment is rated -1 or their video is rated 1 star, Youtube would be a ghost town, now. Same on Omnimaga. Galandros received negative votes, Quigibo received some, Skuller972 a lot, Noah a dozen, Trev66 a few too. I myself received a bunch in the past too (my respect was 110-ish for a while then suddently dropped to 90 one day), yet I am still here and these people still visit the site too. We simply tell ourselves everyone has their views on a subject then move on.

i donno... but...
its just that i think the respect system is seriously flawed...

if you look at my site (www.d3jsp.org) we use a reputation system in which someone can only rate someone ones in a long time so they can not abuse this...

and currently i seriously think that people are abusing this... i mean do they seriously think that my post is that offensive to them that they have to take action instantly and lower my respect?

i think they are just stupid and want to simply piss off people and discourage them from even using this site...
since i am discouraged... abit that is... since i dont really care about what other people think about me on the internet that much...

 ;)

edit:

oh.. and btw... i never use the youtube's up down system...
nor have i rated any post on this site up or down at all yet...
