I've been rather reluctant to post in this thread- but only because I was unsure of what to say on the matter.

I've heard a lot of discussion on this topic mention religion and Christianity.
Not being a religious person myself, I don't understand how religion ties in with all this.
However, I can still tell that it means a lot to Dapianokid and a few others of you, so I respect your faith, whatever it might be.

On the issue of censoring words, I feel that restrictions should be quite low.
I don't really care what words are used, but rather how they are used.
When used out of offensive context, occasional swearing is acceptable. But when used offensively, then there's a problem.
Also, a sentence without swears can easily be more offensive or inappropriate then a sentence with swears.
I therefore feel that a word filter is pointless, as an individual "bad word" on it's own is meaningless. It would catch only some of the offensive content, and still block a lot of inoffensive content.

For surveillance and restriction on a computer.
I guess I can't say I know what this is like; as long as I remember, I've had unsupervised administrative access on the household computers.
But I'll give my two cents anyway: Parents have the right to raise their children the way they think is best for them. I think, generally, the amount of restriction is up to them.
But nevertheless, I think there might be a point where it goes too far for me to easily accept it. Like a constant surveillance of everything ever visited, every private message sent, everything ever typed... I think taking it to that extent might start to become a serious invasion of privacy.

Now in the case of Dapianokid:
It is evident that, although his father has put on some pretty hefty restrictions, he still gives his full appreciation, trust, and respect toward him.
He recognizes that his father knows what he's doing, and is doing it out of love for the overall good.
And instead of being angry for these limitations, he is thankful.

Hearing all that is just great. It is awesome that he gives his parents all the respect they deserve, and acknowledges the positive reasoning behind their punishments.
Not every teenager do the same.

And me, my parents give me a great amount of trust, and especially after reading all of this topic, I feel that I should really show my thankfulness for all of it.
Perhaps I should do something nice for my parents this weekend :D

I think the problem is that certain bad words are misused vulgar words that normally refers to 18+ related activities, while the French Canadian bad words are misused religious object words. From what I gather, this poses a religion-related problem for some people. Religion or not, though, swearing is vulgar, but disallowing entirely becomes a free speech issue (along with people getting scared of moderator warnings for posting), hence why Omnimaga warns people to use those words with moderation.

Recently I got more freedom from my parents to use computers the way I want. They still warn me not to overuse them at cost of my study though (for which I really must thank them)

"Minging" in the lower classes of Britain, for exampling, is a major f-bomb. However, it's not even a real word.
These filters my parents put on usually don't search any code that isn't text.
They also aren't live. So, compiled webapps (like OmnomIRC) and text that updates after the main website is loaded do not get caught.
I try not to dramatize about the things my parents do. My brother did that a lot. He went down a very different road.. He's less than two years older than me and I would be ashamed if anybody here found out exactly where he is. I don't wanna end up like him. Thats why I embrace my parent's decision!
My dad loosens up, and he I'm already not under constant surveilance. Before too terribly long, many of these filtering things will be either taken off, or configured. That way, my internet will be much faster.

epic7 and pimathbrainiac, don't think I don't have PLENTY of time to learn my part of a trio ;) no internet == inifinite time of day. I'm already a third of the way through my school courses (much faster.) and I am writing a remix of Nyan Cat theme. Plus, I've completed like 6 scenarios in RCT Deluxe in less than 3 days. That's saying something.

You never realize how many old discs you have until thats all your dad lets you play! Christ Sawyer was amazing.

Anyways, epic7 your post was very encouraging. The slightly agressive openness about religion here caught me off guard. I do have faith in The Lord Jesus Christ, and it is quite strong. However, I don't like to mishandle a social situation where others don't.
Keep trying.

I'm really sorry about this double post, but it's practically impossible to get on Omni where I can modify a post accordingly. I use the ;imode suffix to use Omnimaga, at least for now.
I didn't intend for this to be such a huge debate... I would've posted it somewhere else. The way Dad was talking, I was expecting a big, fat, goodbye.
Keep trying.

There is this chinese proverb "Don't make decisions when you're angry, don't make promises when you're happy". I bet your dad was angry when he decided to lock your computer down... Now that he calmed down (a bit), I think he sees that it's a bit too much :)

On a semi unrelated note, this is why I got so used to TI-BASIC over the years: From 2001 to Early 2002 I had no PC-TI link cable and it took until 2004 before I get my own computer at home (couldn't afford a computer when family is unemployed or works part time). In addition to that, public computers on which my TI-Graph Link cable worked at all were incredibly rare (especially as everyone was switching to XP, on which no linking software would work properly early on), some school filters blocked zip files downloads and the computers only had floppy drives for external storage medium support. This is why many of my 2001-2003 games only got released online in 2004 and why it took so long until I try Z80 assembly (3 times, to no avail). But my limited computer/internet access led to me spending more time coding or making music instead.

Yes, my interest was quite hampered during the time that I didn't have the proper hardware to invest in my interest in calculators.
