Ah ok, it seemed like you were angry at us or something lol.

Now, I understand this all may be inconvenient for kids, but trust me, there is more to life than calculator forums, and which would you rather have, unlimited access to the internet during your teen years, or a clean life in the years to come? I, at least, would prefer the latter.

Yeah I know, but the issue is that some parents actually abuses those filters. Take JustCause and SirCmpwn for example: Their parents totally restricted access to every site those two people liked, one after another. If they found Sir visiting a site more and more, they blocked it, if he touched the BASIC editor on his calc, they took it away, and so on. His grades were quite good and he didn't neglect his life: In fact he was working for Microsoft! The problem is that his parents didn't like him at all, so they tried to make his life a living hell. On top of that they did not agree with him choosing programming as a carreer, so they tried to prevent him from doing any programming at all.

Filters are handy when used appropriately, but the problem is that some parents just abuse them, like in JustCause/SirCmpwn's case.

Two things. First, you are just saying what you heard them say, you do not know what really happened. Secondly, that is their problem, and they have to live with it since it is their parents decision as long as they are still living in the same house.

Also:
Quote
To the rest of omnimaga, I am not angry

And lastly, maybe having a setting that censors bad words on omnimaga for those who don't want to see them would be good. ;)
yeah true sir couldn't do anything but abide to their decisions. However, I disagree with parts of what stefan said above: If I turned 18 and my parents decided that i was no longer allowed internet access or tried to decide what carreer I'll pursue and disallow me from pursuing programming, you can be sure I would move out to my own appartment (although I would continue seeing and helping them). Even if I was past 18 I lived at their home so I had no control on Internet access, but as adult I had full control on if I wanted to move out or not. If my parents didn't let me move out at 18+ they could end up in jail for sequestration/kidnapping anyway, and if they didn't let me move my own stuff I paid for out, then it would be stealing.

By the way I am sorry if I am replying to separate posts in random order, but I only had 15 minutes total to read through this topic and reply to what I could.

EDIT:
By the way, @Dapianokid, a few things:

First of all, I do not encourage to try to bypass the filters, since the first step is to talk to your parents about it, or at least, Omnimaga, and explain what the site is about. Are they aware that you do calculator programming? If so, then you can explain them that Omnimaga covers that topic, not illegal stuff. If not already, that could help lifting filters. I do not agree with the way filters are used sometimes, but it's best to not make things worse. You also gotta make sure that you know exactly what led to those filters, so you don't repeat the same mistakes later.

However, one second thing: Your forum behaviour since you joined has been overall questionable. If you talk to your family using the same tone as in this post:
By the way guys, SHUT UP! Stop trying to tell others how to hack the restrictions on  internet! Look, if there are restrictions put in place, THEY ARE THERE FOR A VERY GOOD REASON.
Then to me a computer restriction as punishment would be totally justified. All caps on the Internet == yelling. Exclamation marks used when calling out people == doing it agressively. While you may be a good behaving person when it comes to computer usage, the many trolling you have been doing so far (especially towards me) and the stuff quoted above tells me that you still have a lot of work to do on being good-mannered and polite. Flat out yelling at people or being agressive to them for such a reason that could easily have been stated politely is as bad as swearing every few sentence.

The rest of your post and your advice on not telling people how to bypass filters was fine, but just because the advice was given agressively I had to remove a 1 pt rating from your post. I am doing this because if you aren't careful and go too far, then it's not your parents that will block you from Omnimaga, but Omnimaga admins themselves. (rudeness falls under "provocative comments", no matter how helpful the post is).

And third:

DJ_O, you said that the best way to ensure safe browsing is to only check AFTER something bad may already have been done.

You also have to start doing more effort reading posts carefully and stopping putting words in people's mouth, because that's not the first time it happens with me. I meant to check during and after, not just after. I recall English being your native language, so I know you can.

EDIT 2: Regarding word filters, an optional filter would not work, because this would mess up the 2005-08 topics (since the word filter is currently used to fix display bugs there), so some work would have to be done prior making the filter optional. One that can't be disabled would be fine, though, but then I bet some people would either restrain themselves less  or argue about the 1st amendment.

@DJ: So you downrate based on style an not opinion? It's pretty funny since I get the impression that you downrated me too. In fact I ended up with a -1 there while it first was a +1. I personally don't care that much when I get uprated, but I take it seriously when I get downrated.

It was a post directed to someone, meant as a boost. But I now got an impression that some people cannot handle when I get uprated based on religious things.

EDIT: Wrong impression apparently. XD

There have been quite a few uprates/downrates going on in this thread, so I would like to remind everybody of the rules:
Quote from: Uprating Rules
Do not abuse the post-rating system.
  • Rate posts by quality, not by opinion.
  • All post-rating activity is recorded and visible to Managers and abuse will lead to bans.
  • Don't complain incessantly over every negative rating you receive. Your life doesn't depend on your rating score.
It might be that I am not understanding this correctly, but the first part may have gotten abused a bit and so it is easily possible that several managers tried to correct it at the same time.

Sorry for derailing the topic. If you would like to continue, that should be fine, but this topic should have exhausted itself by now. It's message and intent has already been conveyed. If you would like to continue the topic of religion and piety, I would direct you to Other Discussions and advise civility (we have generally had a good track record for this with our regular user base).

I'm going to agree with Xeda and add a few things.

To the rest of omnimaga, I am not angry, but I do have a request. Stop the swearing on OmnomIRC, and don't talk about sketchy things in posts. Even if most of omnimaga is "mature" enough to handle it, we shouldn't have it going on here. And I am not saying this because I don't want it blocked in schools or what not, I am saying it because I want to be able to browse omnimaga comfortably, without having to be afraid that I may see the F word in OmnomIRC, or immoral things mentioned in posts.

That may sound critical, but its just the way I see things right now. Let's straighten our act out. Are you with me?

While you may not like it people can, will, and do use language how they see fit. However, if someone is being abusive or is posting inappropriate content that goes against <a href=http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?action=ezportal;sa=page;p=2>our rules</a>, please report it to a moderator (this goes for forums or IRC). I'd also like to reinforce that this is not a debate thread, and people need to make sure that they behave. :)

Dapianokid: I'm sure once you get your parents trust back things will be much better. I've found that more than anything earning your parents trust back when it's been broken can be quite difficult. We are only human, and we are not perfect.

Can this be split to a debate thread? I do not intend to flame, but I would like to clarify my point...

DJ_O, you being the proud owner of one of my very favorite websites for over a decade, I do respect what you have to say on the matter, especially my behavior. I make no claims to be perfect, or to even be close to one of the more "mature" members of Omnimaga. I'm barely 15 years old. I am an arrogant ass, as well as a pretty devious little stinker.

Any more jokes about me hacking into this computer should be deleted.. For the record, it is never impossible ot hack into a system. This computer already has Ubuntu on dualboot. That is for the convenience of a Linux system if I ever need it. My dad left that there because he knows about my interest in calculator and computer programming. He supports it, even. It's how he started. If it weren't for him, I would've lost interest I think. His first "tinker toy" computer was a Timex Sinclaire Z80. Think about that! It's practically the same set of hardware I started with, the TI82. He has unrestricted access to Omnimaga, Cemetech, TI-Planet, ticalc, casiocalc, and all branches of those websites, as well as WiiBrew and WiiHackWii. He has no doubt in my ability to hack back into it if I were choosing to be immature. But... Already, can't you see my absolute acceptance of my Dad's choices? Really. I've grown up so much in the past WEEK and Omnimaga did have a lot to do with that. I'm only posting once a day because I just don't have time to wait for IE7 to load Omnimaga again on this dinosaur.

Anyways, to prevent my ADHD from inhibiting the content of this post, I encourage everybody to come and share their opinions. I've seen a lot that I don't agree with here, but I liked their approach. I need wisdom and growth.

Stefan, you are the first brother in the faith that I have ever encountered on the internet who is also open about his faith! I'd go so far as to say you're the modern reincarnation of the Moravian church (See Count Ludwig Von Zinznedorf).

DJ_O, I forget that I can use italicization. I would've, rather than yell, otherwise. I don't have internet etiqutte down pat, quite yet. Thank you, though!

There's so much more I wanna say! Don't let this topic die, but please don't fight, guys. I can sense the anger or opposition in these posts and the instant it turns into a flame war, or even a "oh, I thought you were flaming.. *stays weary of any opinions that you don't share*" type of thing, it becomes selfish, off-topic, and completely self-oriented. Suddenly, the discussion at hand matters a lot less than what you believe is right about said topic.

Please... Do have less tolerance for child-unsafe behaviors and content on this website. You know full and well what that means to a christian. I'm a pretty accepting person, but... Please. No more.

OmnomIRC will be locked until he is sure that it won't allow me to hack into other channels from it.
Keep trying.

@Dapianokid: Thank you, but I too am sadly just another sinful mortal who hasn't proven that much with his life.
I too have only discovered few people online who believe the same as me.
But I'm glad I discovered another friend. :)

I'm also going to be updating my signature with a link to a good website about Christianity(which even features some calculator programmers).

I wouldn't say downrating on style, but rather on tone used. If a post is agressive for no reason I will downrate it. I will only downrate based on opinion if I feel the other post is racist/bigot/overly intolerant (for example, bashing a great calc game only for being TI-BASIC or singling out an entire group of people), or if the post blatantly breaks the rules.

Don't worry, I didn't rate down your post, so it means that two other person did or someone negated his upvote. By the way I am not a fan of the idea of rating down based on opinion unless the other post is really intolerant (after all, intolerance is against the Omni rules). I know that some other members do it but I don't know who (except in the KarmTI/nSpikx thread), but the best thing you can do is report it to admins if you find any suspicious activities, like I did before.

Well, not that this topic is, by any stretch of the imagination, emotionally attached to my rather curious downrated status, but I do seem to get downspammed. Only by the providence of a couple nameless friends have I been given the upvotes I rightfully deserve.
Yes, please move to debate. Because it's kind of important.
Keep trying.

Not really, because I don't know if that would be considered spamming, but I would like to see this moved to a suitable section for debates.

You might want to avoid starting unnecessary debates where it's not the place for. Well, you can if you want, but it should be a sane debate and you might want to create a topic for that. A debate section might be a good idea though.

Yeah of course we have the misc talk section for debates (or calcs for calc related debates). People just have to make sure to remain civil and avoid any ignorant or provocative posts so it won't get locked too fast. Note: religion debate might not be a good idea, because the last 4 topics about that didn't work and were locked like 2 days afterward. >.<

By the way Dapianokid does your dad allow you to disable javascript or animated GIFs for specific sites? if not, then a solution could be to use this:
http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?imode
http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?wap
http://www.omnimaga.org/index.php?wap2

It lacks image support, but it can still be handy for quick post reading/replying otherwise.

Interesting site, its hard to find people like us on the internet.

@Dapianokid Its a good thing your dad unblocked these sites, it diversifies our communities.
I can see why parents would want to put filters on, but then again if you go to a public school it dosent really matter  :P
