Math Question Help!
« on: February 05, 2011, 06:18:48 pm »
Hi!  I am working on a random problem that my teacher gave me, but I am slightly confused with one part of the question:

A function f is defined on the interval [-3,3] as shown below:

On the given axes, sketch the graph of f((1/2)x)

Now, I do the horizontal translation, and doing this, I am able to sketch the graph of f((1/2)x), but only on the range from [-1.5,1.5], as shown here:

How do I go about finding the value of f((1/2)x) from [-3,-1.5) and (1.5,3]?  Any help would be much appreciated!

Ah, lemme see... This isn't really my area of expertise, but I think the new equation can only be defined on the interval [-1.5,1.5], so I think you are done. Were you told that you had to find the graph on the range of [-3,3]?

correct me if i'm wrong, but i think that's all you do. the domain of f(.5x) is all reals where -1.5 <= x <= 1.5.

That is all you do.  If that is f(x), then f(.5x) is the graph you gave us.

Ok, thanks guys!  That is what I though it was, but this thing is being graded, so I thought I would make sure! :)
