1-Bit Wizards - The Journey Begins
« on: July 11, 2013, 06:33:48 am »

Howdy folx,

Some friends of mine and myself joined forces to release this epic compilation of Z80 1-bit chiptunes. Styles ranging from Blues via Prog Rock to 70s Electronica. All tracks have been composed on the ZX Spectrum 48K home computer. The album is available for free both as mp3 or in tap/scl format, for those who would to play the music on real hardware or in an emulator. Hope you enjoy!

I like it a lot. Too bad I do not have a ZX spectrum to play these on, so I just use my lame pc. Do you make music for other devices as well? I do have a c64 and an MSX.
If you like my work: why not give me an internet?

For such a limited system, you guys have made some incredible things. Many of these tunes have a Sega Genesis or Amiga sound(feel?) to me (of course dialed down to their most basic elements). I can hear what they'd sound like in better quality with more channels in my head. Really awesome stuff. ^^ Like Keoni, I'm curious if you or any of your friends work with other old formats. :) I myself generally gravitate towards NES or Gameboy chiptune stuff. Some of the newer platforms are good too, (SNES and Genesis sometimes too)but IMO you really can't beat the sound the NES and Old Gameboys generate. They really have a lot of personality. :D

Wow I love this music. :D Reminds me of GameBoy/Color sound indeed but a little bit less rich because single channel.
BTW I know where I'll look for my next ringtone. ;)
Also I guess you are Irrlicht Project ?

Thanks guys, glad you're digging this. Any yup, I'm IP.

Most of us work on other old 8- and 16-bit platforms as well. Some actually have 20+ years experience in making chiptunes, yet others joined the scene just recently.
Factor6 and TDM are oldschool demosceners, they mostly work with ZX Spectrum 128K (AY soundchip). Factor6 actually uses a lot of different platforms, including C64.
Fluidvolt does mainly SNES and N64-flavored stuff.
Shiru is a rather famous ZX and NES coder (he actually coded one of the sound engines used in the compilation). Also, he recently released an awesome FM flavored synthrock album.
Mind Body Alpha is a piano player, he has only released 1-bit stuff so far.
Mister Beep does ZX beeper exclusively as well.
Warlord originally comes from the MOD metal scene. He worked with many different platforms in recent years, most prominently with Atari 8-bit (POKEY) and VIC-20.
Myself, I started on Atari ST but nowadays I do mainly 1-bit music, too. Hopefully I'll get around to making some SID stuff soon, though, been wanting to for years.

Check the links in the readme file for more great chiptunes :)

Cool. I also do things like chiprock using all sorts of different sounds like FM, c64 and nes and crushed samples, but usually I don't use actual hardware because it's so much easier to get a big sound using modern software with the same set of limitations as the old systems. I did some stuff on the c64 using cybertracker, but it just takes so long and the fact that the c64 does not have 4 arrow keys makes it very sluggish because you have to do all sorts of weird button combinations to make the cursor move.
