Lets talk about goals. If TI seriously plans on releasing this, they are advertising the Nspire. It is more expensive than the 84+ or the other z80 calcs. With this OS, TI would be forcing people to consider the Nspire and move away from the 84+ models.

Boycotting the Nspire would hurt TI and force them to give up their war with us. With people abandoning the 84 because of TI's antics, and people abandoning the Nspire because of the boycott, TI would see a staggering loss, since their z80 models are their highest selling models and the Nspire is the most expensive model. If we gathered enough support, it could be very effective.

Aaagh!! If we all contact ti and say that we'll never buy a ti calc in our lives again if they release this it might work.

I'm getting pretty good at this. Here are the Err:Bad Address and Err:Version fixes. Run it through mirage.

Though I doubt anyone will keep this on their calculator long enough to run into these problems...

This is sad. Just sad. If they are going to destory their user base, they are only destroying themselves.

However, I have two other possible explanations for this:
- It's an April Fool's prank. They posted up that OS to creep the heck out of us.
- It's some madman's last day at work (kind of like with the original cover of The Little Mermaid, where the designer hid porn on it).

However, the other thing to think about is that the 83/84 Plus line was really the only line to include native ASM support. If they remove it in this version, we'll hack the system, just like we did with the 85, 82, 83, and 86.

Sorry for wasting an entire flash page, but here is an app that will run DCS for all those die hards out there.

Installing hooks by writing directly to the relevant memory locations still works, so DCS itself should install a hook to run itself.

I contacted TI this morning. This is what I got:

Quote
Anthony,

Thank you for contacting Texas Instruments regarding our TI-84 Plus product line.

There have been no official software upgrades recently. The current calculator software for the TI-84 Plus is version 2.55 MP, which you can download here.

However, there was a mistaken update yesterday afternoon involving a new operating system. The update was removed immediately, as the new software is still not ready to be released. This may be the cause of your confusion.

Another resource you can use to find answers to your questions, example calculations and other information is our Knowledge Base. The Knowledge Base is accessible to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

I hope that you find this information helpful. If you have further questions or comments, please feel free to send me an email.

Warmest Regards,

Doug Fincher

[T]he new software is still not ready to be released.
That's a hilarious understatement.

I think, years ago, when TI actually supported programming, it did.

Yes, it helped us to realize how unhelpful it is.

Also, the real problem with a boycott is this: We're a minority. Most people who buy they're calcs don't know what programming is. They will still buy it regardless.

I hope this doesn't mean this is for Nspire OS 3.0.....I was looking forward to some 3D graphing, but now I'm not so sure, unless they seriously improve the nspire's programming.

The whole "For Singapore" thing and the CX ads make me think that someone at TI uploaded this as a joke.

A boycott is pointless for the same reason that $20 worth of hardware can be sold for $120: the people that create the demand for graphing calculator (educators) are not the people who buy them (students). That is probably also why TI stopped supporting programming. They realized that what we think can't affect their sales. Students will buy their product as long as teachers require it. And that's all they care about.

My point exactly. I wish it wasn't true, but it is. The only way around it would be to intentionally do something truly destructive, ignoring DMCAs and the like, such as releasing a CAS for the 83+, posting it on many, many website (ala nDoom) and then all we'd accomplish is getting the 84+ kicked off the ACT.
