A new 84+ OS ???
« on: February 07, 2010, 02:42:06 pm »
Silver Shadow:
(ninja'ed DJ Omnimaga ;D)

Apparently, TI is soon going to release a new OS for the 84+ !

Source:
http://ti.bank.free.fr/index.php?mod=news&ac=commentaires&id=792

(Note: all the screenshots are from a reliable source.)

It should be out on the 15th of February.
Hope it will also be for the NSpire...

Unfortunately, it looks like it will break compatibility with some old games, as shown in the following screenshot (from Reuben Quest: The Lost Mirror, during a Home Screen sequence where the text-inversion flag is activated):

Here's a complete changelog of the new features in the OS, if you can read french:

Interesting rumor... I wonder if this will come true, given how TI hasn't released any OSes in years

And I'm not sure if I read correctly, but did BrandonW really get a copy of it?

On another note, there was talk about a possible new TI-Nspire OS ( 1.8 ) on two french TI forums too, but that was a shorter while ago:

http://tibank.forumactif.com/actualites-f25/infos-nouvel-os-nspire-t5027.htm

Google Language Tools did a poor job, though... try it for yourself but I doubt you will understand much

UPDATE: added screenshot demonstrating the compatibility with an old lib-assisted BASIC game.

This looks interesting, but at the same time kinda ugly... I hope they do something to slightly improve that.

I don't see why you find it ugly...

I think it looks OK. The TI-73 was like this after all (I have one). However, I hope their new additions won't break compatibility with old BASIC and ASM programs.

Remember what happened to Illusiat 6, Zcopy and the old versions of Omnicalc with OS 1.15 release, as well as the ClrDraw command with OS 1.14 release

I also hope this is not fake or like I read somewhere, someone trying to pass a third party OS as a fake TI OS

I don't know, I guess it's just me. I just don't take a large liking to the design that they used to implement these new features.

Oh about the bugs It would be cool if it at least fixed some of the bugs listed in a topic here. That said I hope compatibility is not broken with regular 83+/83+SE calcs

Ok so it doesn't start really well: :/

Screenshot from Reuben Quest: The Lost Mirror intro, the part on the home screen where reverse-video text flag is enabled (white text on black background). I wouldn't be surprised if more home screen games broke. I have some fears for ROL2 especially. Illusiat 13 should be ok since it doesn't use any text-inverting

More compatibility fail!

This is Illusiat 2004-1 in OS 2.4x (and lower):

This is Illusiat 2004-1 in OS 2.53MP:

And what is that small line below some of the text in ROL2 copyright????

Reports also claims Text(, Output( and Disp are between 2x and 4x slower with the MathPrint function enabled in the MODE menu, so disable it before playing BASIC games (altough it won't fix most glitches)

Hmm.  I don't know what to think.  I think I'll still use 2.43, so it's the same as 83s.  Then again, I would want to try this.  My main question:  Is this real?  I have huge doubts about Ti doing anything for the 84 series now.  It's really wierd.  I hope this is a third party, as it wouldn't be a standard, therefore would not break compatibility with old programs.
Hmm...

I'm not sure, but in any case, I wouldn't be surprised if at one point BrandonW released a patch to fix these issues, but for now people should keep their old OS. I myself keep my Nspire 1.7 OS in case they add this 84+ OS emulation mode in 1.8.

It is illegal to redistribute TI OSes, but I am sure they'll still be avaliable when searching well or on french TI sites for those who want to downgrade
