TI-84 Plus C Pocket SE leaked?
« on: November 21, 2012, 11:48:05 pm »
Days after the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition was discovered, someone on Omnimaga has now posted an interesting picture showing a TI-84 Plus C Pocket SE:

In his picture, however, the text showing the calculator info of both the TI-84 Plus C Pocket SE and the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition models is censored. If TI continues their trend, however, this calculator will most likely have the same specifications as the other color model, just with a smaller design. Since the TI-84 Pocket.Fr was only released in France and the TI-84 Pocket SE in Asia, it is unlikely that this 3rd pocket model will be commercialized elsewhere.

EDIT (Nov 22): As Adriweb pointed out last night after most sites newsed about this, this might be a fake picture from someone tricking people on the forums with a very early April Fools prank. So take all of this rumor with a graint of salt.

EDIT II: Ok, so this turns out to be some sort of prank that Adriweb himself pulled on us. Nice job, considering 3 sites (including us) ended up newsing about it (Cemetech has now removed the news from their front page).
He mentions something interesting, though: What if that joke eventually became reality? Knowing that TI-Planet is affiliated with Texas Instruments and they tend to receive secret information a bit earlier than the TI community, maybe this means something? (especially that TI already started to replace the 84+ series with smaller calc designs in France and Asia)

As a reminder, what we know about the TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition is the following:

-Approximately 21 KB of user RAM
-Approximately 3 MB of user archive
-320x240 resolution
-OS 2.55MP, modified for color and higher resolution support
-Z80 processor
-Native Z80 assembly and TI-BASIC support
-Cannot run 83+/84+/SE ASM programs and compatibility issues with BASIC ones
-Spring 2013 release in USA
-Price should range from $150 to $9995 USD.

On a semi-unrelated note, as TI-Planet reports today, there are reports about TI-Nspire Color prototypes being sold in China. If you plan to buy a TI-Nspire with a color screen, be very careful to not run into a prototype with risks of not being able to upgrade! Thanks to northern_snow for letting us know about this.

Funny, when I saw the original TI-84 Pocket.fr (with monochrome screen) I thought about how the glass covering the screen would have been nice for a color screen. Turns out TI probably had that in mind already!

To be honest, I like the TI-84 Pocket.Fr design, but I always found the Pocket SE one (and this new C Pocket SE design) to not be as great. It just look too bland to me with all that gray. The 84+, 84+CSE, 84 Pocket.Fr and to a lesser extent the 84+SE look much better IMHO.

However it's nice to have a smaller model of the calc. I think I might get that one if the screen isn't smaller and if the specs are the same, depending of how much they charge for shipping.

That's assuming of course that this model is official, though.

Also i wonder why they didn't get rid of Plus in the name? They did with the blue model and it would be much shorter that way.

Yeah, the Pocket SEs do look bland compared to the Pocket.fr (which is the best design for any graphing calculator in my opinion).

But honestly I think with the TI-84 C Pocket SE TI is finally bringing calculator innovation where it should have been in terms of size/specs (and price too, if they want to compete directly against the PRIZM). As opposed to a model that's basically stayed the same and sold for the same price for the past twenty years :P

For the price it depends. If they plan to use that $150 price tag when the PRIZM, which has more RAM and Flash, is $20 less, then they might have a small problem. At the local Staples store I noticed that the SE price dropped dramatically, though, so I wouldn't be surprised if the new calc eventually replaced the 84+SE or had a similar price.

That's the thing—it's pretty clear this is supposed to compete directly against the PRIZM, so if the want to have a shot they'd have to keep the price similar to that of the PRIZM or lower. Otherwise everyone would still just go for the plain 83P or 84P.

Although this was a hoax, Mic on TI-BANK mentions in a comment that he contacted TI-Cares and they said that while they can't divulge any info yet, they had a project about that calculator.

Although TI-Cares aren't always reliable, I'm seriously thinking that next school year, shortly after the bigger model is out, there will be a smaller color model in France.

I can understand wanting to joke about some of this stuff and taking things lightly from time to time, but I'm frankly getting really tired of people spreading crap around like it's real. I lose respect really fast for someone that spreads lies in order to generate excitement where there is none. Some of us take these things seriously -- and end up looking like fools to people that matter when the truth comes out.

I'm sure I'll get "lighten up" and "take a chill pill" responses to this, and shame on me if I end up continuing to spread it to important people without hard evidence, but I stand by what I said.

Well personally I didn't mind the prank as much, although I felt kinda embarrassed (and also for the other sites) who newsed about it, since if that made Slashdot or something, that would make us and other calc sites look bad, and the worst part being that in the future, we would have even fewer chances to see TI-related stuff on big blogs like Engadget and stuff where a popular calc fan site is cited.

Plus I doubt someone like Adriweb would have let the prank run for too long if it got more attention, since he knows very well it might tarnish his reputation. Also, after the OSLaunche April Fools joke him or Critor did a while ago, I'm thinking that the C Pocket SE prank too might have been made up from some real stuff. In OSLauncher's case, the video posted of it was fake and made with video editing softwares, but there was an actual OSLauncher being developed for real behind the scenes: Just not as far into progress as seen in the video. And TI-BANK v1 had other April Fools pranks that turned real less than a year later.

I agree that with such prank, however, it will make people take others (especially newer members) less seriously when they announce new calcs or stuff (plus it might accidentally lead newbies or trolls to join the bandwagon and flood sites with fake new calc pics. It would be nice if there was some topic showing fake calc pics/designs, though, showing how you wished future calcs looked like.

Also regardless of the TI-Cares France comment and some NDA-restricted comments that this calc might be partially real in a not-so-distant future, I seriously hope the design is fake. I really don't like it lol >.<

@BrandonW & @DJ_O : The joke was supposed to be for just a few hours on that little topic, deserving not much attention, but it got out of control too fast.

Meh, if it were real, TI-Planet would have newsed about it darn fast , probably TechPoweredMath would have blogged something etc. :P

Anyway, let me repeat it, I haven't see any official proof that this model will exist, but maybe it will in some years, so it might just be a matter of time..

(Anyway, sorry @Brandon if you were offended by this, but remember, you'd be one of the first to get some official info from "those who know" if a real leak would happen ;) )

Actually, OSLauncher was developed entirely after the video.
