Calc sites bashing... by TI???
« on: May 06, 2011, 05:58:00 pm »
Now that the whole inter-community site issues thing have been resolved and before starting to "harrass" the rest of the staff to help posting news more, what about some TI vs Calculator Hobbyists issues?

It has come to our attention recently that a group of people working for Texas Instruments on their official french TI-Nspire forum that they are accusing TI-BANK of not informing their users about TNOC and Ndless possibly voiding the calculator warranty, even though there were no proof that those softwares can void people's warranty. The ironic thing, too, is that with TNOC, you even reduce the need for a warranty, since it prevents OS 3.0 Boot2 copy from bricking your calculator, and we got no report about Ndless itself permanently bricking people's calculators.

This is nothing: TI-BANK was even accused of being the cause of the dangerous OS 3.0.1 bug that bricks calculators permanently by distributing copies of TNOC and Ndless, even though the bug occurs on calculators on which Ndless and TNOC were never installed!

Source: TI-BANK

Fortunately, Texas Instruments finally realized the bug was on their side and warned people about it (although it doesn't state that on the next reboot the problem could occur). Otherwise, how many TI-Nspires would have been bricked in the world before TI finally realize the source of the problem?

Anyway, for those who installed OS 3.0.1 without TNOC, who want to unbrick their calculator themselves or downgrade from OS 3.0.1, a few tutorials were released on TI-BANK: Here's one to unbrick your calculator and another to downgrade. As mentionned before on the site, you need special hardware to do it. Also the tutorials are in French, so unless somebody is willing to translate them, you may need a translator.

Also, an useful program for OSLauncher users, allowing you to generate OSLauncher-compatible images in one click, was released.

Our biggest problem is that we have a few people in the clc community that know more and do more for calc's then TI has. TI doesn't check its software enough and leaves that to their customers to figure out how good it is

Last year in #ti, I was joking about how BrandonW could remake the entire TI-Nspire OS (without the 84+ emulator) for the TI-84 Plus Silver Edition and still manage to have free archive pages afterward, as an idea of how overly large the TI-Nspire OS was.

If the community tried I'm sure we would make an OS that did all the same functions as the official OS, but did them faster and was a good amount smaller.

Indeed that's what I mean. I am sure even on a lower calculator model it could still run decently fast too.

Regardless, TI really needs to check their crap more before blaming others x.x

Yep I saw this one. I was tempted to include it in the news but the issue was that it was not enough game-development-related (unlike FX-9750GII -> 9860G, which adds add-ins support and I believe string commands) and Omni mostly focuses on that :(. Otherwise that would easily go on front page.

As for TI-USA, maybe they don't care as much and do things behind the scenes, I'm not sure. Maybe they mostly read ticalc.org, though, and aren't aware of Omnimaga yet (which is very possible since our Google rankings are lower for games and we do not have any tutorial on how to use the calculator since we're more into development/gaming).

Also note that Omnimaga had plenty of slow page loadings recently, so maybe they don't bother much.

To tell the truth, I can just say 'Fuck TI'.  In fact I will.  Fuck TI.

They think they can use us as punching bags if they fuck up with something they make incorrectly.  I think we shouldn't take it.  We should advertise their failure, and use it to mock them out of sales, no matter how unsubstantial it will turn out.  TI pisses me more off every passing day.

I really wish they could be chill like Casio.

However, since most of my ideas of HOW to carry out a combat against them always turn out to be shunned, I'll leave that up to more sane people around here ;)

Well the thing is that no matter how we fight, they seem like Apple and Sony so most ideas will fail and when we win, they'll always strike back. Of course, that allows the community to be even more creative, although it's annoying and slows down development a lot.

I'M glad the Casio Prizm got some attention towards programmers. Casio seems to care less about disallowing games.

I personally bought my prizm half because of how well you can program on it, and also just to support the idea that it's better than the CX ;D (which just the fact that you can use a GCC-based SDK to program for it, makes it infinitely better ;))

Yeah true and it was hacked rigth after release. It is less powerful than the TI-Nspire, hardware-wise, and the OS is crappily coded in general (the BASIC interpreter is slower than TI's), but otherwise it's very great

very true ;) casio did a good job at spending limited resourced on coding and 90% of them on advertising, so thanks to that we can do much more on it :)

Lol. But yeah that's true in a sense, although in TI case, they spent resources on blocking their OS, but still managed to release something buggy that goes to the extent of destroying calcs.

I wish they spent more time making their products better, not trying to hinder 3rd party development.
