E-mail notifications fixed
« on: January 11, 2009, 03:25:50 pm »
The e-mail notification system on the forums wasn't working for some reasons, so when you received a new private message from another member you didn't received any notification of a new PM via e-mail, even if you enabled them, and when signing up an account, you wouldn't receive any notifications either. This also means if you have lost your password you would have never been able to recover it, since you would never have received it. Now hopefully this should be resolved.

EDIT: Notifications of comments on your profile (or for staff with files uploaded under their nickname, file comments) has been fixed too and more games added to arcade.

I was gonna say I wondered why I wasn't being notified of private messages this explains it.

Me too, I was worried that it was due to the January 20-21st hacking incident on TIMGUL and the smaller hacking attempts that occured until I switched from IPB 1.3.1 (not the modded invisionfree one, the official one that is filled with exploits) to SMF and changed passwords. The hacker installed a script that sent about 50000 spam emails in a few hours to over 9000 people, then there were multiple complaints and 1and1 suspended my account for spam. But afterward after this was fixed spambots started using e-mail spoofing more and more and I started getting a lot of e-mails from them, but the e-mail address listed is  o m n i m a g a @ g m a i l . c o m, even thought the e-mail didn,t came from there. There's nothing wrong on my webspace now, but I was worried that this caused my e-mail address to be blacklisted as spam address by many e-mail service providers, causing most people to not receive the e-mails. I think something similar happened to calc.org e-mail service provider back in the days. BUt finally it just turned out to be a misconfiguration in the settings that I didn't noticed before.

Btw TIMGUL is hosted on the same webspace than Omnimaga.

Actually there is one more problem, but it's an admin-only related problem caused by either the servers limitations or the hacking incident on TIMGUL a year ago. If I want to send emails to every members at once it will load for about 20 minutes then I will get a SQL database not found error and only like 1/3 of the users will have got the e-mail. The only work around is to send e-mails to 3 bunch of members separately. On Invisionfree this feature worked fine and took much less time to load (about 3 minutes), but you could only use it once per week and if you migrated to Zetaboards you had to purchase a ZB Prenium subscription to be able to use it more often

I understand this limitation though, because some admins use it every day to let their members know about every single forum changes and updates even if it doesn't really matter at all and it turns into spam
