Fall activity down by 30%, but still a record year
« on: January 01, 2012, 02:32:54 am »
Tonight ends another great year in calculator programming, with several great releases, new achievements and discoveries. This resulted in a record year in terms of activity on the Omnimaga forums, with a total of 115419 posts just in 2011 (more than the previous 3 years combined)!

Unfortunately, during the few months after TI-Nspire OS 3.0.x release, most Ndless game programmers went inactive and Prizm developement over here went quieter for a while. This, combined with several of the 2009 members, staff reaching college level and me being quieter on the forums since last Summer, has caused Omnimaga posting activity to drop considerably. From the September to December 2011 period, the site is down by 10619 posts over the same time in 2010.

Nonetheless, those last few months are still incredible levels of content that makes it through the forum database regularly, higher than anything we've received prior September 2010. For the last 552 days, every day had at least 100 posts (although this streak almost ended on Christmas Day) and every hour or so, you are guaranteed to find discussion on the forums. Not only that: Despite the 30% activity drop over Fall 2010, there still seems to be more and more great games being worked on and released every few week, while some of the older members continuously encourage newcomers to perform backups of their progress and to not start too big, preventing an influx of defunct projects. There is also a regain of optimism towards TI-Nspire hacking, with the recent showcase of Ndless 3.1 (which will most likely be released in a few months or so for both grayscale and color TI-Nspire models), Axe and Grammer are still being updated and Casio development is becoming more and more popular on Omni.

Below there are some miscellaneous statistics and records from the board stats. A graphical representation of the daily activity (excluding the old board) can be viewed here too.

3 longest 100-posts day streaks:
552 (Jun 28 2010 - Dec 31 2011), 34 (May 24 2010 - Jun 26 2010) & 32 (Mar 28 2010 - Apr 28 2010)
3 longest 200-posts day streaks:
153 (Sep 11 2010 - Feb 10 2011), 120 (Feb 12 2011 - Jun 11 2011) & 36 (Sep 9 2011 - Oct 14 2011)
3 longest 300-posts day streaks:
27 (May 7 2011 - Jun 2 2011), 23 (Mar 11 2011 - Apr 2 2011) & 13 (Dec 3 2010 - Dec 15 2010)
3 longest 400-posts day streaks:
7 (Feb 24 2011 - Mar 2 2011), 6 (Nov 11 2010 - Nov 17 2010) & 4 (Mar 22 2011 - Mar 25 2011)
Periods with 2 500-posts days in a row:
Oct 10 2011-Oct 11 2011, Apr 12 2011-Apr 13 2011, Mar 31 2011-Apr 1 2011, Mar 24 2011-Mar 25 2011 and Dec 4 2010-Dec 5 2010
5 busiest days ever on Omnimaga, in posts:
739 (Nov 7 2010), 676 (Apr 13 2011), 669 (Jan 1 2007), 660 (Nov 11 2010), 637 (Apr 17 2011)
5 busiest months ever on Omnimaga, in posts:
12666 (Mar 2011), 12636 (Nov 2010), 12041 (Oct 2010), 11693 (Dec 2010), 11273 (Apr 2011)

In any case, we encourage newcomers who are interested in calculator development or need help of any sort to stop by on the forums, as other members are open to any language and will be happy to help you or to take a look at what you have in store for the community!

Look forward for many more releases in 2012. Hopefully activity, both programming and posting-wise, will also remain steady or go back to late 2010-early 2011 levels!

Great post, the last few months were not as active as last year's, but then again, last year's last months were incredibly active, so they're hard to beat.

Nice stats DJ, let's keep on going!

On top of that for those less active months we're still 25000 posts above the 2006 O.O (which was the 3rd most active fall in overall and year)

EDIT: That reminds me, I need to update the notable calc tools/games section when I have time.

One of my resolutions is to "BE ON OMNIMAGA MORE".
Seriously, I'm, like, barely ever on.

Wow, this is great! And we can do better this year >:D I wonder if I should write a series of programs and announce the release dates-- for one week, every day, a release of a full fledged game or program!

Xeda, now it still says POTY2011 in your signature. Care to change?

:P Hey, it was in the running for POTY2011... it might be over, now, but it was an accomplishment :) Though I should change something in that signature >.>

Happy New Year to all of you guys.  Thanks for making Omni the most-posted-at English calc forum.

Excellent post, DJ.  Those stats are incredible to look at; thanks!

There were just two things that didn't make sense to me in the stats:
3 longest 100-posts day streaks:
552 (Jun 28 2010 - Dec 31 2011), 34 (May 24 2010 - Jun 26 2010) & 32 (Mar 28 2010 - Apr 28 2010)
3 longest 200-posts day streaks:
153 (Sep 11 2010 - Feb 10 2011), 120 (Feb 12 2011 - Jun 11 2011) & 36 (Sep 9 2011 - Oct 14 2011)
3 longest 300-posts day streaks:
27 (May 7 2011 - Jun 2 2011), 23 (Mar 11 2011 - Apr 2 2011) & 13 (Dec 3 2010 - Dec 15 2010)
3 longest 400-posts day streaks:
7 (Feb 24 2011 - Mar 2 2011), 6 (Nov 11 2010 - Nov 17 2010) & 4 (Mar 22 2011 - Mar 55 2011[/i])
Periods with 2 500-posts days in a row:
Oct 10 2011-Oct 11 2011, Apr 12 2011-Apr 13 2011, Mar 31 2011-Apr 1 2011, Mar 24 2011-Mar 25 2011 and Dec 4 2010-Dec 5 2010
5 busiest days ever on Omnimaga, in posts:
739 (Nov 7 2010), 676 (Apr 13 2011), 669 (Jan 1 2007), 660 (Nov 11 2010), 637 (Apr 17 2011)
5 busiest months ever on Omnimaga, in posts:
12666 (Mar 2011), 12636 (Nov 2011[/i]), 12041 (Oct 2010), 11693 (Dec 2010), 11273 (Apr 2011)
The first should be "25" instead of "55" and the second should be "2010" instead of "2011," I believe.  Excellent job on the stats, though.  They are comprehensive and very well put together.  Thank you!

Oh right, I didn't notice those typos X.x, thanks for pointing out. Actually what shocked me regarding the activity was September and December, though, because normally in Sept we gain a huge rebound in activity over the Summer and December is usually not this much more inactive than Oct/Nov and is sometimes more active. October and November were still pretty great considering last year about 1500 of the extra posts those months were by me.

At one point I should post modified stats without my posts just to see how things elvolved. :P

Also do you think if Casio development continues to pick up that we should launch a Casio POTY style award?

Most TI community members quit calculator programming and the community shortly after they graduate. This is because in College, they often no longer have any class that requires a graphing calc, so they eventually move on since they were programming during those classes. Those that are more dedicated and still code even outside of classes simply just get too busy than they were in hi school, which is sometimes made worse due to having to work part-time as well, so they run out of time to visit Omni and do calculator games.

This is why there are so few people above 18 that are still active on the forums compared to younger people.

Actually, I noticed that at first I made lots of games when I started TI-BASIC and I made a name for myself in my school because of the RPGs. However, by the end of highschool, I kind of stopped making games and I cannot seem to get back into the mood .__. I mean, mini games that take a minute of thought and 20 minutes of programming are fine, but a full fledged RPG just seems impossible. I wonder if it is the same for other post-highschool members? And if so, I wonder if that could cause them to be less active?
