File archives uploads broken
« on: October 01, 2012, 01:54:44 pm »
Since April, you might have noticed that most attempts at uploading a file in the archives fail, resulting into an 404 Attachment not found message (such as this file). It mostly happens with larger files, such as anything larger than 2 MB, but it seems to happen with smaller files as well.

If you run into this problem, it is recommended until that is fixed that you upload an URL instead of the file. Instead of choosing a file to attach, just link to an off-site file info page instead (only Cemetech, Ticalc.org, Planète-Casio and TI-Planet links are allowed for calculator files).

Just make sure to upload in the right section (here for non-CoT/admin members) and then poke staff in case they haven't approved new files (and tutorials) for a long while.

Yeah we don't get notified of new file downloads to approve, so we don't really check them often, so please poke an admin when you upload something.

(Hey that would be nice if it sends a PM to admins when someone uploads something.)

I wonder if there is a way to have notifications or if that's in more up to date download system updates? I don't recall seeing any such feature before but maybe I missed it. Same for articles/tutorials.

All I remember was how at the bottom of the downloads page, it said how many files were awaiting approval.

Yeah right now that's pretty much the only way to know there's files waiting approval.

Actually, it'd be nice to have a notification similar to reported posts for pending file approvals. I really hope we can figure out what's wrong with the upload system. It sucks with it being either hit or miss. :S

I don't know too much about it, but I wonder if we're hitting a memory limit. When I log in to the server there's always a message saying that the web dir is taking up 90% or something of the total storage available o.o

Hmm that could actually be the case, but then why does Paint15 give a 404 even though it's very small? ???

EDIT: Actually nvm it was uploaded after Fruit Ninja. Maybe you hit a limit after Fruit Ninja? You should maybe check in the EzPortal admin panel or the downloads system panel in case.

Unless the entire site is running out of space? O.O

Note: If you upload something above 2 MB and it breaks, editing the archive with a smaller file will still causes error. Once a file upload breaks, it's over: it's permanently broken. You have to re-upload the file+description from scratch as a new file and ask a moderator to delete the duplicate (and its associated topic).

Eg this:
