HP Prime: the official video!
« on: April 19, 2013, 03:46:15 am »
On the official "hpcomputers" Youtube account, there's now a marketing clip of the HP Prime calculator :)

The 3.5" multi-touch color screen is mentioned, and we can also see the alpha keys superposed to other keys (like on the TI-Z80, TI-68k and many other models from other manufacturers), as well as a battery :D
However, no information about the CPU, RAM and storage room - which are the pieces of information of highest interest to me, as they truly are what defines a platform :(

Through functionalities such as dynamic geometry, and specific students mention, we can see that the calculator is much more students-oriented than many other HP calculator models.

Speaking on my own, I think that the alpha keys superposed with other keys are much more convenient than the Nspire keyboards' two sets of keys and their tiny keys - even with long, thin fingers.

Looks like, from the clip and image, that those who indicated that its screen resolution and CPU / memory characteristics were the same as the 50g's, didn't have access to the correct pieces of information.

Anyway, this calculator technically makes HP calculators much closer to the state of the art in the matter of calculators, or even define said state of the art :)
Of course, this calculator is unlikely to be cheap, but all calculators are too expensive for the limited functionality they provide. Earlier today, I read once again about a platform much closer to its real price: a $12 phone: http://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=3040 ...

We'll see what TI does with the CX Premium :)

That looks pretty neat. Also, it's cool to finally have another color calc which has decent math capabilities. :P
I wonder how the programming is on this(if there is that function...).

The marketing clip is pretty short, and therefore, but unfortunately for us, light on details.

I like the part where they say "brushed metal" and "touch enabled" :) I'm very curious about it's programming capabilities (and other specs ofc.). So far it looks like a nice gadget to have.

Personally, i don't much care for that style of arrow pad. On the Prizm and NSpire i've found it harder to control than the D-pad of the other TI calcs.

It looks like that the companies making graphic calculators are inspired by the smartphone industry.
I'm the only one in my school owning an Nspire CX and a bunch of people asked me if it has internet and if i can call with it.

sadly they(the calculator companies) stop making it like a smartphone when they reach the processor and memory part.

Just ask them why they bought a smartphone if all the games they play run on calculators (Doodle Jump, CubeRunner, Fruit Ninja, etc). I don't know a lot of people really using their smartphones at its real potential (like playing resource demanding 3D games such as RavenSword or something) so really, if they use it like a calc, what is the difference between the calc and the smartphone ?
I own: 83+ ; 84+SE ; 76.fr ; CX CAS ; Prizm ; 84+CSE

That looks awesome. AWWWW YEEEEEEAH
Anyway, I'd have to see the specs and programming capabilities before I buy... But it looks so cool

Interesting, but I dislike the Nspire key  layout (the fact that the d-pad/touchpad is in the middle makes it incredibly hard for gaming). I wonder if it will have 330 KB of RAM and 800 KB of Flash like some sites were claiming or if it will be much more powerful than the Nspire CX? Also I wonder if the OS is a new one like the 39gII but in color or if it's a colorized 50g OS running on a Saturn emulator?

Since the 50g is already $150, I assume this new calc will be much more expensive too?

Can your calc take pictures, make phone calls, send text messages, surf the internet (maybe?), have speakers for sound/music and a touch screen, etc.? :P Also, some smart phones might even be cheaper than an NSpire.

I agree, the design does look nice, but i don't know how i feel about the control pad.

Building off of what Hayleia said and you, chickendude...

I'm that one dude who sucks all he can out of a device and I know for a fact that, due to the Linux port, it can do most of that with the right hardware.
The companies aren't focusing on putting that in, though.
Keep trying.

It's going to have:
A total of 2.5 MB memory (512 KB of RAM and 2 MB of flash ROM), and yes 330 and 800 KB availible respectively
A CAS engine with step by step solving
131x80 resolution screen
3D graphing
And apparently a SD card port (doesn't say what kind)

If it has an SD card port, then we're set. Ladies and gentleman, the newest homebrewing platform!

I don't know how trusted these specs are though because the original source site took down their page about the calculator and there's also nothing on the processor but they're speculating that it's the same one as the 50g since the rest of the specs are the same
Also, this site:
http://www.neobits.com/hewlett_packard_hp_nw280aa_b1k_la_la_hp_prime_p5737329.html
is already selling it for $112.95 but they have no info at all and status is back ordered.
