nDoom policy re-instated
« on: June 20, 2011, 04:18:20 pm »
Normally, during Summer, there is an increase in trolling on Internet chats and forums. So from July 1st until late August (along with the second half of Fall), we usually enforce rules harder regarding that. However, since a lot of people are in vacation now, I noticed an increase in language wars attempts on IRC lately, and we are afraid the zero-tolerance policy which took the nDoom policy name after the nDoom invasion last February and March will enter into effect one week earlier.

What this means is that now, on the first trolling offense, instead of a warning, there will be an instant ban that ends at 2 AM of the following night, coming with the warning. Those bans are not kept on record like the 1 week ones that occurs after multiple warnings.

We would ask our users, especially on IRC, to cooperate, so we can keep the place as friendly as possible during the Summer period. Thank you.

The nDoom policy will become yearly until we see that there is no need from it anymore ( so it will be enforced at around this time each year till just after summer ends until there is no more need for it ). So it was coming no matter what, it just came a week early.

Hopefully we don't have to use this policy for that many more years, but with what has happened in the past I'm skeptical about that.

Sorry if this is irrelevant but,  why is it called the nDoom policy?

Because the same policy was issued during the nDoom invasion.
the zero-tolerance policy which took the nDoom policy name after the nDoom invasion last February and March

I would like to re-iterate that language wars are not going to be tolerated during this period. If anyone, seem to be starting one, please politely tell them to stop and notify the chan ops. Thank you

I'm sad to see it has come to this again.
Well, I planned to re-instate it for July 1st to August 15th since several months ago actually, because I still remember in 2009 and 2010 it went quite hectic for a while (in 2009, people being overly spammy in #omnimaga and Mtgross trying to start inter-site wars, and in 2010, the Bungie incident followed by Zera (not Zeda/Xeda. Totally different person) trying to rule how the site should be ran). As result, I decided to not take any chance this year. Now, it just restarts a few days earlier.

Normally it's from November 1st to Jan 1st.

As for nDoom, basically in late February, Mraklopaz's TI-Nspire C port of the 1993 DOOM classic made it to Slashdot, Hackaday, Kotaku, Engadget and Gameinformer front page news, which brought extra traffic to the site. However, it was also featured on EncyclopediaDramatica (frequented by 4chan/b/ and 711chan/i/ users) and various hardcore gaming blogs, which were highly frequented by troublemakers. The latter caused us to be overrun by trolls for a while. In addition to that, near the end of the invasion we had to witness criticism from regulars from another TI calculator channel I will not name due to how we handled the situation, and they tried to force their site mentality on ours as facts, which added extra tension in #omnimaga. It went so bad that #omnimaga channel was shut down for two weeks from non-staff Omnimaga members, then later was made invite-only. OmnomIRC remained offline during two weeks. In addition to that, OmnomIRC now required 40 posts instead of 20 to be used, then eventually the site spam section was restricted to 100 posts users. Basically, massive restructure. X.x

It's sad it has to come down to this. :(
I wasn't surprised it had to happen with the nDOOM invasion, as Omnimaga is a closely knit community, and when a flood of new people come in, chaos will happen, but having to do this because fewer people are around to keep the peace is sad.

Well, normally new people are fine. We got plenty lately and last school year start and they were all fine. Granted, some people need to be called out sometimes, but it was never as bad as during nDoom feature. I think the nDoom thing is that it was featured on an actual troll site. X.x

Ah, I thought it was because of the sheer number of people coming in, as it was posted on sites like Kotaku and Engadget.

Yeah, while its good not to point fingers like you just showed, I think that "other websites" would be better than "other TI channels" because there's only 1 other major calculator channel, and one other that is frequented at much less so of a pace.  It kinda gives it all away :P
