New black TI-82 Stats in Germany
« on: January 25, 2013, 02:12:09 pm »
Do you know the TI-82 Stats?

In several countries it's been the TI graphing calculators 1st price since 2004.
The TI-82 Stats is just a basic TI-83. It includes the latest TI-83 Parcus hardware from 2001 and runs the latest 1.10001 basic TI-83 ROM.
It's probably been named this way in order to avoid confusion with the new TI-83+ in those countries.

In France in 2006, the TI-82 Stats was replaced with the TI-82 Stats.fr.
But the hardware was completely different: it wasn't a basic TI-83 hardware anymore, but a TI-83+ hardware, slightly modified in order to run basic TI-83 ROMs.
The included 1.11fr7 ROM had been translated to french.

In 2009, the TI-82 Stats.fr was redesigned in black but kept the same ROM and hardware.

In Germany, since back to school 2012, we've now got a new TI-82 Stats redesigned in black too:

We're wondering if it's still based on the basic TI-83 hardware, of if they moved to the modified TI-83+ hardware from the TI-82 Stats.fr, and if they've used a new ROM version or not.
But of course, the specifications are the sames as the basic TI-83.

Hmm, interesting.
Perhaps it's an 83+SE this time? :P

I saw the 2009 one before but I didn't realize the 82 Stats would be redesigned too, especially considering it was discontinued in many countries. I wonder if it will feature 83+ hardware so that we can do the same thing as the FX-9750G to 9860G?

What do you mean ?
The TI-82 stats.fr have a 83plus-like hardware and nobody did anything with it...

The TI-76.fr & TI-82 Stats.fr feature 83+ hardware too, but nobody has managed to turn them into real TI-83+ yet.

Well, didn't such thing require modifying the hardware, still? I was sure that the 76 and 82 Stats.Fr was close to the 83+ hardware but that something in it prevented it from being converted into a 83+ (eg it would have required a small hardware modification or something) ???

Otherwise, what is preventing such thing from happening when we did it fine with the 9750GII?

And yes persalteas I meant that it was possible to flash your FX-9750GII so that it becomes a 9860G (although it doesn't work with newer models). By the way, to clear up any confusion, the FX-9750GII is actually the Graph 35+ USB in North America and the 9860G is the Graph 85.

This "something" would probably be kept with the new 82 stats.

I wonder if it's just a protection against the conversion of the lower-end calcs into higher-end ones? (especially now that people managed to do it with the TI-73 and TI-Nspire)

The TI-82 Stats.fr & TI-76.fr Flash ROMs have a grounded pin which physically limits you to the first 256KB , preventing you from accessing the whole 512KB Flash.

But even after modifying that, no Boot Code menu can be triggered with DEL+ON.
So we couldn't find a way to reflash the OS (the basic TI-83 OS is not designed to receive any OS).

And as the ROM only includes a basic TI-83 OS, you can't address more than 256KB in assembly, and there is no instruction/port to rewrite a Flash page.

The difference with the Casio Graph 35+USB / fx-9750Gii is that we were able to trigger the Boot Code install OS menu.

Ah ok thanks for the info. I remembered something about a pin or something, but I forgot what it involved and what it did. I am betting this was added in order to prevent a TI-82 Stats.Fr->TI-83+ conversion or whatever. But if that is not the case, then maybe TI might decide to make it easier to produce calcs by using only 1 hardware for all the low-end models rather than having to keep in touch with 2 similar but different hardware?

wouldn't you rather by an 83+ or an 84+ over that one? What is the sence in making new versions of it then?

The idea is to provide people a cheaper alternative. Maybe they wouldn't be willing to spend on a TI-83+, but if the price were a little less (what the 82-stats is) they would.

Yeah, it's kinda like the TI-73 in USA. But in France you got two lower end alternatives to the 83+. I am sure it has to do with higher prices in Europe or fierce competition from Casio and maybe people having less money in overall though.

Dude!!! That is one sweet looking calculator.

Finally... a calculator that actually looks better than my HW1 TI-89.
