I got my hands on a CX on Thursday; unfortunately, this is the first time I've had a stable internet connection since then.  Once I got it, I opened it ASAP and charged it up and immediately began making my first program - a quadratic solver.  :P

:w00t:

The CX yielded some surprising and not-so-surprising information.  Anyway, it turns out I get a slidecase after all.  ;)

Yay, TI didn't take the dumb route!

- The CX includes a slide case

Good.

- Battery percentage is measured in increments of 25%

Reasonable. You don't really need anything more, lol.

- Length and width are very similar to an 84, but about half as wide

Nice, how does it feel in your pocket?

- Battery life is similar to a phone's  (or maybe I use it too much.  :P)

You probably do :P I doubt anyone outside this community replaces their batteries as often as we do.

- Shiny

:hyper:

- Light

Finally.

- Screen dims after a couple of minutes of no use

Sounds like a nice feature. Is there also Auto-Power DownTM?

- 115.2 MB of space left after OS is installed

That's great! I wonder if it could be used as a flash drive someday.

It's pretty much a handheld computer.  Turning on seems to take no time at all, but turning off does.

Awesome! You mean you don't have to wait ten seconds for it to turn on anymore? That really annoyed me on the Nspire.

As for this, the answer is definitely yes.  A video of the CX is available for download here, as requested by Scout.  ;)

* sigh... At least the specs are nice.

On a side note, I met program4 this weekend.  :D

Nice :D

Lol, that's almost a perfect description of the Prizm, except for the part about 115.2 MB...
* Qwerty.55 wonders if the Nspire CX is actually a Prizm with more memory :P

What'd you think? :P

EDIT: It's a bit longer too, I guess.

It's rather suspicious that mere months after Casio releases the Prizm, TI releases a "new" color calculator... ;)

Note: From what I remember, the CX doesn't support MSD mode, meaning you still need to get through the hassle of using a connectivity software to transfer files between your calculator and the computer and forums are still gonna get flooded with "Calc not detected by computer" help threads. The Prizm supports mass storage device mode.

As for battery life, does it supports AAA's or does it only use rechargeable batteries? I know on the Prizm they say the AAA batteries lasts 140 hours, but some people used theirs for much longer and the indicator still says they're full.

AFAIK, it only supports its Lithium Ion Battery.
And yes, there is APD, you can even set the time before it APDs.

EDIT:  btw, there's a "Reset" Button on the back of the CX (the kind you stick a paper clip in to reset), presumably to allow teachers to reset calcs with ease.  I suggest covering it up with masking tape and write your name on it.  ;)

Ah ok. I wonder how fast batteries will be drained when Wi-fi is used... with the PSP it was insane...

How is the APD? ON the Prizm you can choose 10 minutes or 60, and you can set the LCD so after 30 seconds of non-use, it decreases to the lowest backlight level. The backlight doesn't turn OFF, though.

But I don't know if they fixed it in the CX yet.

The Prizm also has a reset button on its back, but it doesn't do much because the OS stores very little in RAM. How the Prizm does memory management is that when you create or edit a file it is stored in the MCS, which is a section of RAM. Then the next time you shut down the calc, the MCS is saved to flash. Plus unlike on the 84+ it's impossible to select between ram or flash storage. In other words it acts more like a real computer. So really the only way for a teacher to delete everything would be to delete the upper half of ROM which is the Mass storage mapped portion. This can be done from the memory menu, but through the use of hacks it is possible to save items in the lower half of ROM which is unaffected by archive clears.

List of stuff I need to do before September:
1. Finish the Emulator of the Casio Prizm (in active development)
2. Finish the the SH3 asm IDE/assembler/linker program (in active development)
3. Create a partial Java virtual machine  for the Prizm (not started)
4. Create Axe for the Prizm with an Axe legacy mode (in planning phase)
5. Develop a large set of C and asm libraries for the Prizm (some progress)
6. Create an emulator of the 83+ for the Prizm (not started)
7. Create a well polished game that showcases the ability of the Casio Prizm (not started)

So this is why shutting the calc down takes about 3 seconds and that when you pull a battery while a program is running you lose some progress, but not the entire RAM content?

APD can be set to 1, 3, 5, 10, or 30 minutes.  Auto Dim can be set to.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 5 minutes

by the way, some times random squares of color appear on the screen until you click something.  but otherwise, the screen's quite nice.  ;)

And if you attempt to use a CAS-only function, there's an ad for the Nspire CX CAS.  :P
