New TI-84 Plus Orion videos: unboxing & keys features
« on: September 03, 2013, 10:19:57 am »
In a previous news, we were finally announcing you the availability of the first talking graphic calculator in the world, the TI-84 Plus Orion, and were presenting it you in the images and video.

If we add the new TI-84 Plus.fr USB and color TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition, it's a great back to school of the family of TI graphing calculators using a z80 processors this year. ;)

Today, Chase Crispin lets you rediscover the TI-84 Plus Orion with all its accessories as you're going to get it if you order it, by unboxing it before you:

The mystery of the two mini-USB and micro-USB higher ports is still unclear to us at the moment. Chase confirms that charging the voice module requires the mini-USB ports. As we doubt that sharing data with the computer or other calculators is going to require the micro-USB port for which appropriate cables aren't included, the utility of the latter remains to this day enigmatic. Maybe this is a specific port for the voice module which doesn't communicate with the calculator at all, and could for example be used to update the module firmware from a computer.

Here is a second video by Chase Crispin where you can discover the voic module keys features, and the new features of the calculator keys:

Interesting, so this seems like a normal TI-84 Plus after all, just with an extra module attached to it. Does it mean, however, that it could be attached to a 84 Plus C Silver Edition instead? I forgot. Does it also slow the calc down a lot?

Apparently, you can't buy it separately.

Once unscrewed, yes the speach module can be attached to TI-83 Plus.fr USB, TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, and TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition.

But as it requires a special OS build, it might not work or at least no fully work on those models.

I assume that if you install the required OS, it's going to work on TI-83 Plus.fr USB and TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, but not on TI-84 Plus C Silver Edition.

Something I wonder is if that special OS will be installable on other TI-84 Plus models and feature built-in sound capabilities that could be used via the link port or something

I seriously just spent 25 minutes of my life watching these videos. I wouldn't say they were moments wasted, because I chose to, but I have no idea WHY I chose to. 0.o

2^3=8, not 16!!!
Keep trying.

The OS is available on TIplanet, and is installable on normal calculators if it is resigned with rabbitsign. It seems no different from the normal OS except for the version text, and that zstart doesn't work.

Spoiler For some of the calcs I own:

(actually I have quite a few more than this, but I don't feel like making bars for them all.)

This was my mistake.
You don't have to resign the OS and can install it directly on your TI-84+.

I checked this and this is very cool. I was impressed by the module in the video actually, despite the TI-Keyboard compatibility issues. It should hopefully be very handy for visually-impaired people.

By the way, how does the module behave if we move the cursor over a 8000-bytes long line of code (for example, a massive Axe tilemap)? Of course that is unlikely to happen for the average user of that module, but I am curious if it just speaks during one hour, mentionning all 8000 chars one by one? :P

In fact, it's smart enough to skip the currently spoken item if you move over to another :)
