Not sure wheter to downvote these posts for bringing bad news...
j/k; this really sucks. Glad I have ndless on my nspire ;3
Yeah the bad news itself would definitively deserve dislikes, although it would be kinda unfair for the user (and isn't how we use the rating system here anyway). But yeah this is bad news indeed. TO be honest, though, seeing how inactive the Nspire community got after the whole OS 3.0.2 anti downgrade debacle and the arrival of the 84+CSE (which is surpringsly open as much as older models), I kinda gave up on the TI-Nspire. One day, maybe TI will release a new TI-Nspire that has limited Wi-fi support, but no USB/Serial/3.5mm port, no screws that can be removed to open the calc (like the Xbox 360) other than the battery pack and pretty much all Ndless exploits fixed. It seems like they're still on an all-out war against 3rd party development on that calculator.

Although the Nspire is still a very solid machine for school usage, IMHO I would recommend that people who plan to program or play games instead choose the TI-84+CSE, which is already very popular too, or the upcoming HP Prime, Casio Prizm or an older model such as the TI-83+/84+/SE, FX-9860G or TI-89 Titanium. The ClassPad has a CAS so that can be an option too, but like the Prizm, BASIC is very slow and like the Nspire, it lacks ASM/C. The Prime lacks ASM/C as well, but its BASIC language is so fast that the addition of ASM/C support is not as much of a big hurry as it was for the Nspire. Maybe a new hack will break this new Nspire protection, but it can get quite annoying if a new anti-downgrade comes out every 6 months, blocking your own calc again.

This sucks. :'( Now, if someone wins an Nspire CX in a contest/giveaway thing hosted by TI, they'll probably get the one with the bad OS. D:

The TI-Planet contests Nspire CX were received months ago.
So probably no problem with those.

I think that the most frustrating part of this protection is that you can downgrade the boot2 in the emulator without a problem. It is just on real hardware where the protection comes into play.

Spoiler For some of the calcs I own:

(actually I have quite a few more than this, but I don't feel like making bars for them all.)

Pretty normal, as if there is a new NAND chip or a new Manuf image, we don't know about them and can't tell the emulator.
So it's emulating what works: hardware revisions A to I.

What would be ironic is if TI organized a programming contest for the TI-84 Plus, where ASM or hybrid programs were allowed, yet they gave a J model TI-Nspire CX as prize. <_<

I seriously hope that if Omni staff were planning to give TI-Nspire calcs for a contest prize that they already bought them long ago.

well yeah, i used to want a nspire cx, but not really anymore now seing as how locked up it is, resulting in the community even on the older models dying due to only a small portion of the cx users being able to use it.

The only way to keep the nspire definitely open is an hardware exploit..
But that's even more unlikely than TI getting nicer.

But then again not everybody would like to mod the hardware on a 100€+ calculator.....lazyness and being afraide to break something.

I rather mean something like holding esc on startup prevents the CPU from resetting its registers and PC.
That'd be a bug that can't be worked around using software.

yeah indeed. If it was actually an hardware modding like on the CFX-9850G series back in the days, I remember that nobody other than MPoupe ever bothered modding their calc to run ASM. Even without modding, if you still are required to purchase extra hardware it still reduces the userbase considerably, unless that hardware is available for purchase offline worldwide (which isn't the case with the RS232 thing. Else, if an hardware exploit requires no modding, it has more chances of being used by community members at least.

but wouldn't a hardware exploit again be rather easy for ti to fix with newer models?
