New TI-Nspire OS coming out in May 2011?
« on: April 22, 2011, 08:36:09 pm »
TI has announced on Facebook that a fix to TI-Nspire OS 3.0.1 would come out in May.

OS 3.0.1 contains three bugs: One with some math functions as shown in the screenshots on this page, a battery power detection problem causing the calculator to report 0% battery power even when they are still good and the extreme major bug causing the calculator to permanently stop working due to a Boot2 3.0 issue.

We hope that the new OS fixes those, but we would advise against upgrading when it comes out, so people can make sure it's safe for developers and gamers. We hope that the new OS doesn't come with a protection against 3rd-party Lua files (like how they blocked tns files generated by 3rd-party tools), an even stronger anti-downgrade protection or... *shivers* this.

I'll definitely wait to upgrade. I'll have to see if this is a safe OS.

This is so like TI release a beta with lots of bugs that they call a final product. At least now we know why they haven't released the CX's yet...

Yeah maybe this is a bit why the new calc is taking a bit to come out. Casio released the Prizm with plenty of bugs, although fortunately none can permanently brick the calc.

I wish TI learned their lesson from OS 2.0, which did the same thing as OS 3.0.1. They released OS 2.0.1 quickly afterward.

If the problem is with the boot2 updater as we've hypothesized, then it wouldn't affect the CX (CXes would already have boot2 3.0, so the updater would not run).

maybe they didn't know what the bugs would be. They just wanted us to test their calcs and OS's for them

Well, one thing's for sure -- they need to fix that bug.

Scout: having to repair the calcs bricked by their faulty OS costs them money. This is probably a more powerful motivation that the PR disaster we're actively helping develop ;)

Well, bricking is pretty serious. It's not like those bugs and glitches we got with 2.53 and those other OSes, which most normal users wouldn't experience. And as Lionel pointed out, that's another $100-$200 per bricked calc, plus the customer loss. With the ACT and AP tests coming up, I'm more surprised they haven't fixed it yet.

TI customer service in France and other European countries seems pretty good though...

It may be good, but sending the calculator to the repair service means that if they cannot borrow one, and are unwilling to buy another one, affected users remain without a calculator for days, or even weeks (in theory)...
