Forums, front page and downloads update
« on: September 16, 2008, 04:15:18 am »
In the past days there has been some updates on the website. First of all, a "Download discussion" section has been added on the forums, which will allow you to discuss files we add to the archives in the future. From now on, whenever we will add a file to the downloads section it will automatically create a new topic in this board section. All files uploaded before September 15 doesn't have a topic obviously but they can still be created anyway. This feature also allowed us to display the latest files added to the archives directly on the front page too. Altough it is rather rubbish due to the portal and download systems being used (file name appears twice and the comments links goes to the topic, in which you need to click the URL to the file information page) it should still be useful when a few files are added.

As for the download section, due to the cumbersome file upload procedure we decided to not link to shell files in each calculator RPGs descriptions anymore. We will just mention the shell name required and you will have to go to the newly added "TI shells, kernels and plugins" directory and download the appropriate file directly there.

As for the original downloads, the cumbersome file upload procedure, in addition to being busy and a slower internet connection, are the reasons why the old files are still not avaliable again yet. To include screenshots with files we needed to upload all of them on the server first, then for each file we add we need to put HTML code to display the image. We also ran into the problem of authors. Since the download system only let us choose members who have an account on the forums we would either have had to pre-register unused accounts for each of these authors on the forums and the better but still slow solution would have been to include the author name in file descriptions, which, without HTML formatting, would have been barely noticeable at all. Luckily I discovered the system lets me add custom fields though, so now for file uploading we can add the author name in that field. We didn't used this feature for screenshots though, because it doesn't support HTML code. This might help speeding up the whole process a bit though. As you can see, a few files have been added. In the Our Products section, the Windows Games/Utilities, TI-83, TI-86 and TI-89 sections are all complete. Hopefully we might get started on the other sections soon.
