We are proud to announce the start of our annual summer coding contest! The theme this year is artificial intelligence. Contestants are challenged to make a game utilizing any form of AI.

The categories this year are:
z80:
  • 1. BASIC
  • 2. Axe/Assembly/Hybrid BASIC/Grammer
Nspire/Prizm:
  • 3. Basic
  • 4. Lua
  • 5. C/ASM
We are offering an electronic giftcard with a value of $100 to 1st place prize winners, and $30 to 2nd place.

Contestants should send an email with a link to their forum profile and a .zip containing their source, executable, and readme to o m n i m a g a c o n t e s t @ g m a i l . c o m (remove the spaces) by July 8th, 1:00AM GMT-5. Late entries will not be accepted. Axe/Hybrid/Grammer entries should state which app and version should be used to compile/run the game.

Rules:

1: The game must not contain adult material or extremely offensive content (such as racial slur).

2: You are not allowed to enter a project that was started prior the start of the contest. You can use code, images, and ideas from it, though.

3: You are allowed (and encouraged) to announce updates and screenshots of your project anywhere, but you are NOT allowed to provide any download copies of it (or the entire source code) to anyone until the end of the contest.

4: Help is allowed, as long as you respect rule #3. Also, keep in mind that usage of other people's code may affect your originality score considerably.

5: You must have a forum account to participate.

6: Only one entry per person per category is allowed

7: Your entry must be submitted before July 8th 2012, 1:00 AM GMT-5. We will not be accepting any more entry past this deadline.

8: Omnimaga has the right to change and modify the rules at any time.

Forum members interested in judging should message a staff member. You may judge any category that you are not participating in. The results will be determined by community vote (40%) and by judging (60%). The criteria will be as follows (Limitations of platform and language will be considered):
  • Theme: How the quality and application of AI enhances the game
  • Graphics: Uh, graphics. Is it pretty? How do graphics enhance the game?
  • Gameplay: Overall quality, fun-level, replayability, addictiveness, etc.
  • Speed/Usability: Controls, speed, compatibility (for z80, can it run on 6mhz models? can it run on both nspire and prizm?), game design/flow
  • Originality: Original game concept, application of a port, application of old code or others' help

Good luck!

"2: You are not allowed to enter a project that was started prior the start of the contest. You can use code, images and ideas from it, though."

What does that mean?
You can't use a (stated) submitted program but you can use it's code?

Hmmm I'll prolly participate in the BASIC one: )

Spoiler For funny life mathematics:
1. ROMANCE MATHEMATICS
Smart man + smart woman = romance
Smart man + dumb woman = affair
Dumb man + smart woman = marriage
Dumb man + dumb woman = pregnancy
2. OFFICE ARITHMETIC
Smart boss + smart employee = profit
Smart boss + dumb employee = production
Dumb boss + smart employee = promotion
Dumb boss + dumb employee = overtime
3. SHOPPING MATH
A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs.
A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn't need.
4. GENERAL EQUATIONS & STATISTICS
A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband.
A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife.
A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend.
A successful woman is one who can find such a man.
5. HAPPINESS
To be happy with a man, you must understand him a lot and love him a little.
To be happy with a woman, you must love her a lot and not try to understand her at all.
6. LONGEVITY
Married men live longer than single men do, but married men are a lot more willing to die.
7. PROPENSITY TO CHANGE
A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't.
A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change, and she does.
8. DISCUSSION TECHNIQUE
A woman has the last word in any argument.
Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument.

Girls = Time * Money (Girls are a combination of time and money)
Time = Money (Time is money)
Girls = Money squared (So, girls are money squared)
Money = sqrt(Evil) (Money is also the root of all evil)
Girls = sqrt(Evil) squared (So, girls are the root of all evil squared)
Girls = Evil (Thus, girls are evil)
*Girls=Evil credit goes to Compynerd255*

* Hayleia wonders if TinyCraft II 's chickens can be considered as AI :P
But even if they were, the projet was started before the contest, so it is not doable.

Good luck to every participants :D

Just to clarify, you probably have noticed we put the Nspire and Prizm in the same basket. The C category is for both calcs in the same category (bonus points if you can compile your code for both calcs), the Lua one is obviously Nspire-only (unless someone ports Lua to the Prizm in the meanwhile) and the Basic one is pretty much Prizm-only (unless you manage to make a good game in Nspire Basic, which I doubt you'll even be able to do so).

Could you maybe number each category, so it's more clear that C is separate from Lua or not?

Also what about Nspire ASM? (although few people probably still use it)

I guess it would enter in the C category, as it uses Ndless like C.

Also there's no 68k category as it's not popular enough, but if enough people are interested, we might probably add one.

That sounds cool, I might pariticipate.
Am I allowed to use techniques (e. g. a tilemapper or a savegame organizing routine) not related to any special game I developed before the start of the contest?
