Title: Omnimaga reaches 5 millions requests. {AP} retires.
Post by: DJ Omnimaga on July 19, 2010, 04:21:02 pm
Since this SMF board opened on August 25th 2008, Omnimaga just broke the 5000000 requests milestone, 3 and half a month after reaching 3000000 (http://ourl.ca/4703). In June alone, Omnimaga had 742447 and if the trend continues, July 2010 looks like it may be very close to June record, not to mention the 4th month in a row with over 500000 requests. Only for the year 2010, over 3 millions requests were served so far, compared to 1608095 for the entire year 2009. In terms of unique visits, April, May and June were all above 100000 a month, with 103268, 115436 and 119632, respectively.

The forum is also continuing its way into records breaking. Last week, when I was inactive for a few days, the forums have hit the 30000 posts barrier, becoming the first TI board to hit 30000 posts since 2006, where both Omnimaga itself and Cemetech achieved this, with 30132 and 36520, respectively. It did not take long to hit 30132 as well, meaning that we also broke our yearly mark from 2006 as well. The new board, which is turning 2 years old on August 25th 2008, a few days before Omnimaga 9th anniversary, is also approaching a total of 50000 messages.

On a less good note, we are sorry to announce that {AP}, one of the oldest Omnimaga staff on this SMF board, has left our programming team, after being part of it for almost 2 years. In his stay at Omnimaga, he released various TI-BASIC+xLIB programs such as a map editor to help xLIB programmers making tilemaps for their platform, puzzle games or RPGs, an Avalanche style game and some tutorials. In addition to that, he also released an userbar generator, available through the Misc section of the site, and helped people in various ways. He was also Omnimaga co-admin for a while during Summer 2009. Unfortunately, following life issues, came time constraints, such as college and Summer school, and finally it came to the point where he was too busy to contribute to the team anymore. So today, he is officially stepping down from his Coders of Tomorrow position, although he will still remain a bit active in the Omnimaga community in long terms.

We wish him good luck in his future projects and hope he still have some free time in the near future for himself and continue hanging around.

Nice, the continuing record-breaking is awesome :)
As stated elsewhere, too bad for {AP}. Hopefully he'll hang around, though :)

Me too, I hope he sticks around for a while, even if not as active. I think he will, though.

goodbye {AP}, hope you remain with us here!

I now realize I made an extremely self-contradictory post.  (goodbye, I hope you stay)<--wtf?!

Thanks for the kind words everyone, but don't worry. I plan on sticking around. Omnimaga was the first place where I was able to share my projects and the first place to accept them even back in the crappy 'text adventure' days of my coding. I'll continue to share my projects here until the site is down for good even if they probably won't be calc projects anymore. (Although I do plan on doing at least one big project before I retire from calcs for good.)

Though I don't know how active I'll be while I'm still in college. It'll be random for sure. Maybe one full day or maybe a whole month at a time. Who knows. No matter what, I'll still be watching everyone's projects and maybe helping where time allows. You'll see me logged in a lot but I most likely won't be posting. If you need anything, feel free to IM me though. I can make some quick replies and such more easily that way.

For now, I'll try to keep posting for the rest of today.

Glad to hear about the record breaking :)

{AP}, I'm sorry things have gotten to the point where you have to step down. I'm glad to hear that you're still gonna be sticking around and I can't wait to see some of these projects you have going (calculator or not). Good luck with everything :D

I'm glad you are sticking around, at least.

Despite you leaving staff, there is one thing I am really happy about, though, and it's that in overall, your life seems to have been better in the past months or so. Last Summer seemed quite hectic (and scary)

{AP} I'm glad you're sticking around.  You're a great coder and a great asset to the community.  Thanks for all you've done! ;D

As for records, I was gone for a week and a half and almost 300 topics have been posted in.  It'll take me a while to sort through all of this. ;D

Yeah, I think close to 90 had posts in it in one single day, too. I checked and there were 462 new posts. On the old board, we barely went above 3 pages of today's active topic, same for United-TI. Usually the 3rd page only had 2 or 3 topics. It happened 3 times I think on Omni and about 4 or 5 on UTI too. However, if we still had IPB, we would have reached 4 pages 2 days ago :P

Keep in mind that we got Slashdotted the day beforehand, though. Also, I was catching up on some unread topics from last week :P. Since a few people here probably check /. website, they probably decided to check Omni new posts as well that day. Also traffic increased a lot since we got referenced in Slashdot. Quite surprising it remained this high considering it's Summer :P

Best wishes to {AP}.

I can't imagine what is the size of 5 million requests served in bytes. Surely way over 9000 bytes!

Probably over 9000 megabytes! ;D

Edit: 666th post! >:D

Lol :P

Actually it would be hard to tell, really, because on 1and1 there's no way to check how much data transfer occured by domain name basis, like with page views and unique visits. Before Omni opened, I used about 25-30 GB a month through most of 2008, then 35 GB. Then it slowly went to 40-45 during a few months, late 2009-early 2010, then in March 65-70 GB. Now we hit about 75 I think. You need to keep in mind that a lot of mp3 files are hosted on this webspace, as well as some videos and computer games, so that takes a considerable amount of bandwidth compared to small calc programs.

Fortunately this package has 1200 gigabytes of monthly bandwidth, so we're not even close to exceeding it.

On a side note, on the server, Omnimaga is about 2-3 GB large, while TIMGUL is 9-10 GB large (about 1600 song files, a lot of which are unfortunately corrupted, though)
