Simplethinker joins staff
« on: December 08, 2008, 01:32:58 pm »
We are pleased to welcome simplethinker in Omnimaga staff ranks. He was a member of the old Omnimaga forums in 2007 and currently is working on a clone of Chip's Challenge for the TI-84 Plus series. Unfortunately the game will not be compatible with the regular 83 Plus and 83 Plus Silver Edition models as the game uses the clock functions only avaliable on the 84 but there may be a version released for these models in the future hopefully.

Please welcome simplethinker to our staff!

congrats, simplethinker.  Hope your game goes well, and that an 83se version could be made.

Thanks guys ;D
A version might be possible if I can get a (close to) uniform time between frames, so counting the frames could be a steady measure of time (not sure how it might turn out though).

well on the NES and even the SNES most games had innacurate time actually, like in SMB1 time went like 2x faster than normal and in metroid about 3x faster. However you would need to keep it close to the real time so it isn't too slow nor too fast, while still keeping the game at decent speed.

In Illusiat 7 the time almost goes at real speed during the final escape sequence but it was made on OS 1.12 so on newer OSes it is a lil bit slower. For Reuben Quest 2 the final escape sequence goes almost at the normal second speed but I'm sure it's still innacurate. I can't test it on older OSes though because Omnicalc required 1.13 or above to run x.x

IMO, 83+s really need to be discontinued. theyre overpriced and inferior.

Well the thing is that the 83+ doesn't have much less functionanlities than the 84+. All the 84+ has more is the openlib/execlib and clock functions, 3x more memory, an USB port and faster speed, so a huge price difference cannot be justified. However I still feel that the 84+ should be the same price than how the 83+ was at its peak and the 83+ should be dropped by at least $20. Here 83+ is $128 and 84+ $148. Because of that low price difference, most people goes for the TI-84+.

I'm sure the 83+ will eventually be discontinued. It will just take a while. The TI-81 got discontinued 4 years after TI-82 came out and by the time the TI-83+SE was about to come out they were still selling 82s and 83s (altough a different design). On another hand, the TI-83+SE got discontinued the day the 84+SE came out so it's hard to tell

When used for math functions (what they were originally designed for) there is absolutely no difference between the 83+ and 84+ calcs.  The 83+s can be bought for ~$80 (new) and 84+s for ~$130.  If you needed one for a math class, what would you choose?

[edit]@DJ: I just noticed that the "simplethinker" links in your post link to Art_of_camelot's profile.

mhmm strange I will check that x.x

oh and I have no idea why the 83+ is still that overpriced up here in Canada compared to the 84+. Prices here makees no sense. until about 3 months ago, the Nspire was only $12 more expensive than the 84+, even thought it still retain (almost?) all TI-84+ compatibility

The Staples website says nSpires are $150, 84+SE $140, 83+s are $110.  I guess it is a small price difference.  I could have sworn that whenever I see an 83+ in a store somewhere they're $70-$80.

I was temped to edit that post myself, but altering an admin's post first day on the job doesn't seem like a very good start :D

well the only way I wouldn't like my posts to be altered is in malicious ways or fill my profile with goatse (altough you can't edit profiles, but netham did that one once on a secret test board back in march after I edited his profile I think)

I could post screenshots if you desire (j/k)

I was originally planning on grayscale, but it's turning out so well with monochrome I'm sticking with it.

It should be done within the next 20 years, but beyond that I'm not sure.  I'll post an update either tonight or tomorrow since my sister is using the computer with wabbit/PTI, but I have a lot of the engine done except for enemies and I'm reorganizing my sprite pics right now (to make the movement routines easier on me.
