Staff renewal time. We're hiring new calculator programmers!
« on: August 30, 2009, 02:44:09 am »
As you might have noticed, our staff list has shrunk a bit since the past few months. We have lost Art Of Camelot, Bfr and Trevmeister66 this summer due to inactivity or loss of interest toward calculators, and today, we are losing Speler for a long inactivity (despite many promises of the upcoming opposite in the past 7 months). This brings us to a total of 8 programmers in our team, including administrators. Also, despite summer ending, most of our projects haven't picked up again yet.

As a result, for Omnimaga 8th anniversary, we're looking to increase activity and interest toward calculator programming once again, so Omnimaga needs to go through staff renewal. Basically, we're hiring.

Currently we are seeking programmers for graphing calculators. They can program for whichever calculator model(s) they desire, using the language(s) they want (TI-BASIC, ASM, C, BBC, FastRPL, etc). We, at Omnimaga, are mostly aimed toward game creation as well as game producing tools creation and our goal is to provide a community formed with an open-minded group of individual. As staff, you are granted the following:

-The ability to upload your games and programs to the download section. (under "Our Own Work")

-Sub-forums for each of your projects (under "Our Projects"). These projects, as well as your member profile, will be linked on the front page right sidebar.

-Despite admins usually doing moderator stuff, regular programmers also have moderator privileges. You don't have to do this task, but such privileges can become handy at times. (such as banning spambots)

-Because Omnimaga is also involved in music creation and Windows game producing, if you ever lose interest in calculator programming (and hopefully you don't) and move to PC/Music development, such work can be uploaded in our archives (except remixes and covers) and you can still remain staff as long as you are willing to remain active on our forums. An example of this is our staff "Necro", who has been Omnimaga staff for almost 5 years, despite having quit calculator programming 4 years ago.

Now here are the requirements to be able to apply for staff:

-Your user account must have been created at least two months ago. Else, there will be a delay before your application is processed (although it might be rounded up to weekends, depending on if I am busy or not).

-You need to already be active on the forums. At least 10 posts in the past 30 days. In fact, when hired, staff members are required to make at least 10 posts per month from August 15th to May 1st and from June 1st to July 1st.

-You need to have a calculator-related game or programming utility in the works. Screenshot or detailed description and indication of any progress will help. Although we welcome newer programmers we still try to keep a certain quality control, so if your project is "UB3R 4W350M3 GR4Y5C4L3 YU-GI-OH LIFE POINT COUNTER OF THE DOOM" your application is gonna be rejected.

-You must not have previously received any ban longer than 6 days.

-You must be able to survive 3 Ashley Tisdale RickRolls in a row.

-If you used to be Omnimaga staff before, you can only re-apply if you meet the above requirements and haven't been demoted for any reason more than once.

These requirements are simply to make sure that we know who we are going to hire, what they are up to and if they are going to be active, not just disappear randomly every month or two. As mentioned on our front page, our goal is to provide a discussion environment free of any hostility for all coders wanting to learn, give or get help, show off their work and/or discuss. If you meet these requirements and are interested in contributing to the team, simply send me a private message and I will look into your application.

Please note that there are no current time limit for this hiring run, meaning that if you haven't been here long enough to apply you can simply wait until you do or if you send it now I will let it pend until it has been two months since you joined. Don't send your application too much in advance, though, because I may forget.

Lol, :P

By that grayscale thing I meant that new staff needs to have a certain level of skills in calc programming. It doesn't have to be like MaxCoderz and Revsoft staff, but if a member only does math programs, small text games or stupid useless programs/games that has been done 100 times before, like most stuff that was uploaded on ticalc.org every week around 2005-07, then he has less chances to be accepted.

Being rejected doesn't mean you can never apply again later, though. People eventually improve or get more interest into programming so they get more chances later. If a person also behaves correctly on the forums or IRC he eventually gets more chances too, unless that person ever received a ban of at least 7 days before (like Skuller972, for example)

Well I can remember stuff, but it depends. Sometimes I have short term memory and can forget stuff people told me a minute ago. It is even worse IRL.

As for a huge text game, it would need to have a certain quality too, though. But even then, I encourage making games with a minimum of graphics because on ticalc.org people are sick to death of text-based games (altough not as much as before, now that text-based games have their own directory in the BASIC game section at Ticalc). Plus, for learning, you can check forum help section, TI-BASIC Developper wiki and ask questions if you are confused. I am fairly certain that you could eventually make some other stuff. Plus, Tifreak has this RPG Starter kit which is in the downloads section

May I be considered? I would like to think I have the skills and I'm willing to show my skills if necessary. :)
BTW, I will be more active now that my internet is back.

Cool to hear about your internet, I was a bit worried you were gone or something, altough I understand since it's summer, people tend to be less active on calc sites. In fact, this is why our staff rules says 10 posts a month requirement except during May, July and first half of August, else we would be booting our entire staff every Summer. It might take a lil while before I process your application, though, as I need to make sure you will actually be active and I was not much around when you posted -.-

I replied to your application, though, to let you know it was received
