TI-BANK and Revsoft temporarily unavailable
« on: August 20, 2011, 02:44:40 pm »
It has come to our attention that TI-BANK, one of the most active TI forum on the web, and Revsoft, which WabbitEmu comes from, are undergoing some temporary but extended downtimes right now.

In TI-BANK's case, their free hosting provider decided to suspend the website account because it used too many server resources. We do not know a lot of details, but TI-BANK has been enjoying a big increase in traffic in the last years, reaching more than 100000 visitors one month and several hundreds of downloads per hour. They have plans to solve this issue as soon as possible, although we do not know if this will involve an hosting provider change or even an URL change (when we got warned by one of our former hosts that we might be using too much resources, we got suggested to move to a VPS or dedicated server). Hopefully they can resolve this issue without too much hassle.

In Revsoft's case, the website has been down for over a week now apparently, like a few months ago. However we did not hear any news from the ones in charge, so we do not know how long will it remain offline (last year they remained down for a month once). Hopefully it is fixed soon.

I hope they get fixed soon.  :(

Also, I grammer-fixed the title, since that might convey different meanings.  ;)

i emailed critor yesterday afternoon (from the point of view of GMT+1, it was yesterday afternoon), he replied, having the same problem. The RSS feeds are down, as well as the board, and of course the website :/ I know their provider (who's also a famous french ISP) and I didn't think they could do that, although they are setting up protections against warez and hacks hosted on their servers (for example, you can download maximum one file at a time and 5 each 24 hours). I hope TI-Bank will come back to life once more (i mean the attack which critor and mic were facing in June). Sadly, there are no (or few) providers which offer a quality of service as powerful as their old ISP, so a commercial provider could probably be choosed. More to see in the next days ;)

Hm, that sucks. Hope they don't have some stuff like HADOPI involved. I think France have the reputation to be really paranoid.

I thought it was for illegal downloads in general. Hm that's stupid, it only covers 2 types of illegal downloads. (France government also have the reputation to be incredibly stupid when it comes to technology (OpenOffice is a firewall, right?).)

Well if it's due to illegal downloads, I wonder if Free could have freaked out at the presence of files such as TI-Connect 1.5 or some rare TI OSes? TI did not seem to care but maybe Free got a different philosophy about that type of files.

Maybe TI-BANK just kept going above the new downloads limits?

critor and I read the conditions of use (personally, i read them twice), and there is no limit of space. They did that without respecting their promises :/

If Free had found some old TI OSes, I hope (i might be wrong) they would ask TI, or TI-Bank...

Oh rayquaza59, those space limits are pure lies. This is the same with every commercial free hosting providers or cheap hosts.

Take for example Cemetech's hosts. They have plans offering 9999 GB of webspace and 9999 GB of bandwidth. If they got 1000 websites hosted on a server and 999 of them uses 1 MB of space and the other one 9998 GB, it will be fine, same with bandwidth as long as the big site won't slow every other websites down. However, if all 1000 sites started using this much resources, then the host couldn't keep up. Now what they do is that they offer this space as long as your site won't affect server performances. Now as soon as a server starts running slow  and customers complain, the company will start checking every website to see which one is causing those performance issues. What happens next is that they shut down every site that appears to be using more resources than the others.

The sad thing is that some companies will not warn, they'll simply suspend your site, because they don't check often enough.  http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/Overselling

Today, there are more and more of those plans where they offer 200 GB of webspace or even unlimited webspace for cheap amounts of money, such as $4 per month, or free hosts that offers 10 GB of webspace and bandwidth for free with no ads. However, in most cases those are lies to attract customers, because those companies know most customers won't even use all their diskspace, but when one starts doing so, they shut it down.

Sadly we can do nothing because the contracts mention that abuse of server resources can cause account suspension, no matter how much diskspace and bandwidth you use, and those contracts are ambiguous about what they mean by server resources. They will never state how much server resource usage is abuse, so that they can decide when they shut an account down.

The only solution is to choose a more expensive host that offers like only 10 GB of webspace and 100 GB of bandwidth for $20/month instead of for $3/month. Those are usually managed more properly and will simply speed-throttle your account during busy times instead of shutting it down. Else, there's the VPS/dedi server solution but that's more complicated to manage and more expensive.

The short term solution would be to get a cheap host somewhere that oversells, preferably something like Cemetech has, which seems to allow people to use a bit more resources compared to 1and1 and Free, but make sure the site scripts are optimized to avoid taking too much resources. Also keep the chat box hosted elsewhere like it is now, unless you moved to a VPS or something like Omnimaga.
That said if it's because they found GBC/NES ROMs or TI proprietary files, I agree with you that they should have sent a warning that they cannot host those files if they're still copyrighted or something. This is what TI themselves do when they want something taken down.

Yes, there is no reason to cancel the contest as it was hosted on 2 websites and http://www.inspired-lua.org is still online.

You can still send your project to [email protected] - the email is still working... for now.
