TI France Releases Actual Pictures of TI-84 Pocket
« on: March 23, 2011, 02:24:12 pm »
After a mysterious announcement that later disappeared about a month ago, TI France has finally restored both the information page and new official pictures of the TI-84 Pocket, as reported by TI-Bank.

Although an appealing part of this calculator is that it carries the same functions of the original TI-84 Plus, it also has several drawbacks.  First, much like the new Nspire CX, this calculator does not come with a slide-cover, thus exposing the screen to the elements and increasing the likelihood of damage.  Secondly, it only has the amount of memory of a normal TI-84 Plus, not the memory of the well-adored TI-84 Plus Silver Edition, thus showing a step backwards in memory size. :(

As of this time, the TI-84 Pocket will only be sold in France.  Will it eventually migrate to the US Line?  Is TI using France as a test market?  Only time will tell!

It seems neat (the calculator) but I feel like the drawbacks overweight the advantages, the arrow buttons look hard to press too.

It could possibly run some GB games, but not Pokémon for sure.

Also from the pic, it seems like it has a screen protector like the 80 and 82. I hope it doesn't get scratched easily like the other old calcs, though.

ALso any ideas about the price?

I think TI uses France to attract more customers or old customers with gimmicks, even if they already have another graphing calc or even a 84+, because they're in direct competition with Casio there (the most active Casio dev forum is in French) so they're gonna offer them even more stuff than here.

Well, the gameboy used external storage....
Another challenge for kerm or calc84? :P
A little device that allows the calc to read the GB cartridges?

Unless I can get the data to map directly into the TI-84+ address space, external storage is a no-go.

I can't see another reason but that for Texas to release it in France only.

Well, not necessarily.  It very well could be a French-only product.  Stuff like the TI-82 Stats have been France only for years now.

The size is nice, and the screen looks really clear. Arrow keys might not be too bad, except maybe for playing Tetris or something (distance between left and right keys).

Overall, it looks like a great calc. Why wouldn't TI sell it over here?

Looks nice, but the Prizm is sexier ;)
I remember someone did a hardware mod and basically put a whole gameboy color inside their calc. With the smaller size, this would be cool if it were done again.

Edit: 3 (!) replies while I was typing.

Actually the regular 82 STATS got released Europe-wide, but then got quickly discontinued outside France.

Oh yeah, the 82 STATS, a girl in my class had it but gave up on it and got a nspire.

Looks like TI really really likes the Casio Prizm shape but it looks like the same old gray screen and with less memory why would someone buy it?  Maybe it is cheap?
