I assume that was how TI-Smartview used to be, right? I recall some people saying that that emu emulated the software rather than hardware early on and a lot of ASM programs didn't run, but I think this have changed.

But yeah such quick removal can be bad when they just release something, unless it's really dangerous such as permanently bricking your device/forcing a reformat. If I was them I would just issue a quick patch release. It's not like security exploits are leaked worldwide an hour after the release of a calculator-related app anyway.

Also according to Kerm the Nexus 7 is pretty similar to the iPad in terms of power. I just checked Newegg and it starts at $189.99 it seems, which is a $310 price difference over the iPad! That said, it would require a lot of work to port, though, unless TI signed some sort of lucrative deal with Apple at the condition that they do not release the app for rival OSes?

To be a little more precise, the issue is, for the user, more of a bug, in its appearence. It's not something dangerous ;)
(Also, there is the auto-save, which I love.... :P)

Edit : Officiel statement: "Immediately after the TI-Nspire Apps for iPad were posted on the App Store, we discovered an issue with App Store settings and have temporarily removed these apps from the store. We are working to update these settings and will repost the apps as soon as possible. "

Pulling an app and indicating that the cause is security-related isn't necessarily very smart a move for Apple / TI. Differential code analysis, should anyone undertake it, could pinpoint the problem and hint for attack vectors.
"Security issue" could also mean that Apple told them to remove programmability, particularly if the language is as powerful as Lua, couldn't it?

Why would programmability be a problem? I have quite a few programming apps on my iPad (python, C++, basic, javascript...)

Has Apple really dropped that restriction?

Oh wait I forgot about that Apple restriction junk. Programming languages are against the rules, so since it's possible to use TI-BASIC on the Nspire Student software emulator it would prevent it from being released on the AppStore. However now that this is brought up, I thought emulators were banned from the AppStore althogether? ???

It isn't a real emulator and it avoids the thing Apple doesn't want above all other things: it doesn't make running binaries possible. But I think Apple also doesn't want Lua...

Apple needs to get with the program. Even Nintendo recently allowed an app whose main purpose was implementing a programming language.

One thing, though: Did the maker of Petit Computer give Nintendo some money to convince them to add it? Sometimes I wouldn't be surprised if that kind of stuff was worked out through deals, even if not millions were involved.

No no no, my edit apparently didn't get seen :

I don't know why it was first said to be a "security" issue since the real thing behind all this, from the user point of view, really has nothing to do with a flaw/exploit or anything. It was just a bug, maybe with syncing (?) or something, since it's said to be related to the App Store settings. The bug was annoying, at first, but that the auto-saving feature made "acceptable" in certain conditions, since the launch time is quite fast. (but once it's fixed, it's definitely going to be better.)

Also, ikj, it's not an emulator, the whole thing has been rewritten and compiled for iOS.

I don't understand. The programming apps I have on my iPad allow me to run and compile programs I write. And they've been on the App Store for some time.

Well nobody misunderstood your initial post when they saw security in it, because it really said Security issue :P

EDIT :
Got this from TI : "The App has been temporarily pulled this morning due to a security issue in the final build. We are working to get it fixed, but we don’t have an ETA on when it will be back up for download – might be a few days. It was just pulled in the past 30 minutes."

Apple bans video game emulators because they don't want to deal with legal issues from console manufacturers. They do allow programming apps now, but everything has to be self contained.

Aaah ok I see. However I don't think video game companies can do much about NES/SNES/Genesis/GB/GBC stuff, considering emulators are perfectly legal. It's when people start trying to put ROMs and Bioses or CD images available for download on the AppStore that problems can arise.
