TI-Nspire OS 3.2 is out!
« on: June 06, 2012, 07:52:27 pm »
Hi everyone,

Today, Wednesday, 6th, June 2012, TI updated its OS for the TI-Nspire series (CX or not and CAS or not), to version 3.2 (more precisely 3.2.0.1212).

However, we do not encourage -whoever has to take exams with calculators allowed to update yet, since :

- This OS, as we announced it months ago, comes with an additional protection that fixes the flaws used by Ndless 3.1. You then will NOT be able to use Ndless 3.1 on it (thus not all the programs that require it, especially mViewer for example). Ndless 3.2 will have to be needed, whenever it comes out (it may take months) (But you can donate to Extended ! :P) But apparently the downgrade protection only got set to 3.1.0 (and not 3.2.0 as expected), so you can go back to OS 3.1 and use Ndless without problem! You can no longer downgrade to 3.0.1 though.

- No independant tests have been made to see if there still are some bugs (or new ones), on different points like maths (CAS), or on a general usage level, or also on a deeper technical level (boot …) (We remember the OS 3.X which contained a bug causing some Nspires to become unusable....).

- It is possible that some documents created with OS 3.2 aren't fully compatible with previous OSes. This will especially be the case of scripts using the new functions of the 3.2 API.

This OS was quite expected, since TI improved the math features and the Lua scripting ones, and created quite some buzz around it. Some features of the OS 3.2 had been annouced duting the 2012 international "T3" conference in Chicago.
Few weeks ago, TI published a PDF showing its main new features, which we summarized in this topic
Here are some previews in images (some are animated) :

If you are not affected by the warnings above, or that you are willing to take some risks let us know what you think of this new OS. We can't recall enough the the use of TNOC, the for Clickpad and Touchpad models, who still have a boot2 which remained at 1.4, a version allowing users to keep some control of their machines. Works even after having updated to a "downgrade-protected" OS since DowngradeFix breaks it.

Downgrade protection moved from 3.0.1 to 3.1.0 (so you can downgrade but only to 3.1.0)

Well, technically you're gonna lose Ndless, but you can reinstall it later.

It has been tested using an emulator (downgrade), and there are also keys that the downgrade protection is 3.1.0 (instead of 3.0.1).
So, in theory, it is possble to downgrade. No one here has tested on HW because it was 2am in France :D (3am now)

I thought Adriweb confirmed it worked on HW?

According to a Chinese user who participated in a training of Nspire Lua in Shanghai, TI hasn't released the OS on its site because of the compatibility problem of Chinese environment... And the wireless connection sometimes delayed.

I just tested the downgrade in my own nspire: I had 3.1, installed 3.2, then installed 3.1 back and ndless again.
That all went fine.

* Darl181 is wondering if the anti-downgrade protection being one OS lower was on purpose or otherwise
Hoping it was intended..

Maybe, after the mess with the other OS bricking calcs (3.0 iirc?) they're allowing some way out in case something crops up?

I have just successfully removed my 3.2 dev version and installed the production version.
Anyway, TI did not yet update the links on their website. It's not yet officially out :P

Yeah, that's the only plausible explanation for OS 3.2.0.1212 allowing downgrade to OS 3.1.0.392: letting users a way out of the bugginess (if any - time will tell) of OS 3.2.
