Users impersonation
« on: October 23, 2011, 04:04:31 am »
Recently, there has been some events of users impersonation on IRC and, although I will not name people, I was impersonated too.

We want to reminds people that such things and others in the rules are not allowed here. The EFnet portion of the channel is completely logged, while the Omninet one only the convo is, although it is still possible to track down who connected on the last one. Pretending to be someone else, which can lead that person to troubles, such as not believing the real person joining afterward is not an imposter, is usually considered as bad netiquette and most sites will ban your duplicate account or the host name used for impersonating purposes. This also applies to staff, since they have to show example.

Also, if you are using a proxy we can still detect if you're an imposter. The IP address will be different than the original user's one. In the case you are using a bouncer that is the same as the original user's hostmask, you will get your access to that bouncer removed and if none of the staff is in charge of it, that bouncer will be banned from the channel.

I can understand that this is not nice at all. Especially that people who are banned register with other names.

How many people have been impersonated?
AM I  A VICTIM?? O.o
I'm not worried about SOPA creating censorship, that will not stand for long. I'm worried that they'll succeed in stopping piracy!

Wow... are there really people who do that? :P

There could be a way to verify users by identing into a bot. It should probably be limited to the necessary members unless someone can automate translating the SQL data to the bot... :P

OmniNet already have a NickServ who helps combat impersonation: on connect, type /msg NickServ help register. The webchat we provide have a field to type your NickServ password (not to be confused with forum password). You can then /whois people, a "logged in as <user>" line will show up if they're logged in.

We could also provide a way to change your hostname to a personalized one when you login, much like some users actually have.

@Boot2490 I don't think so.
So you were not DJ_OO?
Yes I was. I was also DJ and DJLost or the like. It's just one time that it happened and the user used the nicknames DJ_0 (with a zero at the end) and TI_. Afterward he used a similar hostmask as I did, but that could have been somebody else that time (eg if someone banned was reading the logs while the impersonation happened then decided to do the same). The first time, however, it was not a banned user, although not a very active one.

I remember seeing people being warned for doing this. I think it's irresponsible and childish and I hope it doesn't happen again. Too bad people are doing this :(

Ahh yes, this works very well too. :) I was referring to the EFNet side of things, however... which as we all know, is a "service-free" network (e.g. no NickServ/ChanServ).

Well personally what I do on small servers is /whowas, but that doesn't work as well on Efnet.
