WARNING: TI-Nspire OS 3.9 in June?
« on: May 19, 2014, 08:18:43 pm »
******WARNING********

As usual, when a new version of Ndless comes out, it seems that its days are already counted. This could be the case with Ndless 3.6, as it was reported on TI-Planet that T3-France seems to be confirming on Univers TI-Nspire forums that OS 3.9 would most likely be coming out in June, just before exams.

The big version jump is because of how the iPad and eventual Android versions use their own OS numbers, not necessarily because of major feature additions or changes.

If you eventually run into a copy of that OS or the student software asks you to update, make sure to NOT upgrade until the TI community is certain that it's possible to downgrade from this OS and still use Ndless 3.6 afterward. It could very well be a security update to intentionally block Ndless. There is usually a delay of 6 to 12 months between new OS releases and Ndless updates.

Considering how TI is sometimes, it's entirely possible that they haven't even figured out how to block the new Ndless yet or used an even easier protection. I won't get my hopes up, though, plus I am surprised the new OS didn't come out sooner, since they're usually pretty quick on the anti-Ndless trigger.

Fun fact: This entire news posts except the source links used to be written like this, as I was curious if anti-Ndless lockdown alerts would make it through the news filter if made very visible :P

Well, in Ndless 3.6's case, implementing a fix would probably take a minute or two... You can clearly see the hole Ndless is exploiting by looking at the source.

We'd be quite (happily :P) surprised if they hadn't patched this internally, ready for the next update

I'm sure its just a matter of time before TI completely shuts down the Ti Nspire. It will be a very sad day when that happens

They won't do that. It's their flagship after all. However the next model will probably be armored and use 9001Kbit RSA keys, with a very minimal os that just says "Hello world" to be exploit free. Oh, and no external connectors.

EDIT:

Now i've got evidence it's coming out on June 4 + YOU CAN'T DOWNGRADE TO 3.6 :banghead:

Sucks, but I can't say I am surprised. Had Ndless never come out for OS 3.6 I bet we would still have been able to downgrade to at least 3.6.

Yeah, the TI planet news clearly states that it's just an attempt to block Ndless. Did anyone look for exploits in boot1 ? Because that would mean absolute total freedom since we could then write our own boot2 and outperform Nlaunch which uses boot2 exploit patched by TI.

Yeah, I looked at the changes and they are not that significant enough to warrant a 3.9 version jump (but again, maybe they now follow Firefox/Chrome/Opera philosophy). I am 100% sure that all bugs present in OS 3.6 will still be in 3.9 because TI's team devotes their entire efforts in blocking Ndless rather than fixing more important issues.

Oh well, now if only HP could release one more HP Prime firmware update before school restarts that fixes the important remaining bugs and make the OS more math-friendly (right now, it misses some features important for math classes in France, so the calc usefullness is limited to specific parts of the world such as USA or to dwindling calc game programmers), then market it better, maybe it could be an alternative for those who wants an higher end calc that is more open.

Yeah, TI changed the way they label it because of the iOS and supposed Android versions.
Also, exactly what you said about HP. I'll get me a Prime when I can (I reached a grade where I no longer use calcs for math so yeah :P).

Also the Prime is a little cheaper IIRC (outside Canada, at least). The touch screen based graphing also makes things very handy. It's mainly the missing features required in certain math levels, particularly outside United States, that makes the calc less reliable, not to mention stability issues, although from experience they seem to mainly happen when you try to connect the calc to both the connectivity kit and emulator simultaneously.
