Any chance we could have the pixel art contest thread expanded to just include all kinds of contests and that there could be a pinned thread to suggest contests.  Further, contest management could be extended to multiple staff and such...and could also orginise joint contests between multiple sites.  Iow, can the contests be stepped up a bit, oh, and the deadlines made much shorter (like 2 weeks max) between each one?  I think that would be a great improvement.

Last summer we had plans for more than just Pixel Art contests, we thought about coding as well. I was the Pixel Art manager until I didn't have time anymore, and then Kevin took over. The long deadlines are because lots of people do not have much time to work on side projects, but then again shorter deadlines would increase activity. :)smile.gif

CDI went manager for PA contest 4, but he seems to be gone for a while, I hope he comes back soon :(sad.gif

That would sound really cool.  I wouldn't mind running part or all of it.  I too agree that for pixel art contests, the deadlines should be shorter.  But for larger contests, like programming contests, we'd need to allow more time so people could actually submit an entry.

CDI'll be back next week. And yes, I'd like to have a coding contest. Basic & Asm. Perhaps i'd compete, if i'd like it and if i was good enough for it :)smile.gif

programing with a deadline that is close forces you to put as much creativity into as little substance as possible: eg if you were making a puzzle game you couldn't put in tons of diffrent elements and all and if you were making an rpg youd have to limit the number of enemies and length of game and such...and youd have to do your best to work with what you make in the aspects of how creative you can be with it.  Eh, maybe its just me but having to make a program in 2 weeks sounds like a fun challenge.

The real reason I never get an entry into any of the contests is that I try to put to much stuff in because others might put that much in, so on and so on, until I give  up.  With a short time frame youd know everyone has a short time frame too.

Yea... I entried a contest at UTI once (the one in which u had to make an Asteroids game) but I didn't finish my program... Didn't have time :)smile.gif

But programming for a contest over a period of weeks might be more fun.

Well who is volunteer? Actually if we start a contest we need to plan what will be the theme, and maybe get user opinions by posting a poll here. The one in charge of this would post about it on other forums he visit like MC, UTI, Revsoft, etc like the PA contests

well, could you create a suggestions forum in the PA section to allow people to post what they want to do?  The after we had ~30 we could select some to be put up to be voted on...and then start the first contest.

suggstions
1: rpg of 2000 bytes or less...maybe 2-3 weeks to make

2: using just black, red, yellow, and blue...best 32X32 (or smaller) humanoid sprite...maybe 1-2 weeks

3: best animated "movie" on calc using one picture file or less...maybe 3-4 weeks

4: best snake game...1-2 weeks

well, please suggest some things your selves you guys...here are some more

suggestion 5: best donkey kong game using 1 pic or less
(2-4 weeks)

Suggestion 6: best space ship shooter with 2000 bytes or less
(2-3 weeks)

Suggestion 7: best adventure game with 4000 bytes or less
(3-5 weeks)

Suggestion 8: best physics simulation
(1-3 weeks)

Suggestion 9: best game with 3 or less buttons used
(1-2 weeks)

Suggestion 10: best b/w animated movie (computer/gif/calc/whatever) under ten seconds
(3-4 weeks)

I suggest the best RPG with one dungeon, 1 boss, at least 2 enemies and a small storyline

would this be basic and xLIB (and possibly C)? Because I can count on my finger the members here who code ASM

I'd love to make a mini RPG for the TI-89. Really basic stuff, like you said Kevin, 2 enemies, 1 boss, 1 dungeon. It sounds like a lot of fun to code, so I'll make one regardless of contest or not. :)smile.gif

Those ideas all sound really cool.  I'd be too busy to enter but I'm sure that a lot of people would enter.  I like the idea of basic + xlib since thats what the majority of coders here use.

That would be cool, now we only need to ask on other forums if ppl would be interested and what would be the theme. We also need to know if enough ppl want to enter the asm category, as there isnt a lot of asm programmers out there

Cool I hope to see how this turns out. One of the mods should announce the contest on other calc forums. I dunno if it will be ticalc newsworthy though as we will prbly not have prizes to offer like UTI besides maybe some forum stuff tho

I have contacted CDI regarding the contest and proposed a number of things.  i will wait to hear from him before begining anything.
