RPG, still nameless, my first project
« on: February 02, 2006, 08:46:00 am »
My first post on one of the TI boards... *enjoys the moment*

My RPG. I already spoke to a few people on IRC, and let them know I am working on a RPG for the 83/84+ in BASIC. Since I am (almost completely) new to programming and the TI community, bear in mind that this project may disappoint you if you are expecting too much from it, it's my first serious attempt at a game.

I haven't seen a game like this on the platform yet. There are a bunch of RPG's, some very good (Kevin's work comes to mind), some very bad and some average games. Browsing trough the ticalc.org file archives I concluded that most of the so called "RPGs" consist of either A.)Text or B.)A battle engine. Only few actually let you actually walk around and battle.

I want a game to have player allocatable stats, making each character different, lots of items, monsters and environments.

I will be posting updates about progress I make (hopefully daily updates), and I might show some screenshots soon too. Before I list the current status of my game, I'd like to let everyone know that I am looking forward to learn more about programming and our precious calcs, and I hope to be a valueable asset to the community!

Status
Semi important info
I code in BASIC, and to start out I took a look at tifreak's tutorials. I modified his matrix homescreen walk/hit detection engine to fit my needs. I'm afraid I will have to ditch this and move on to strings because of space limitations, but I use Resource as a temporary solution, plus I think using matrices might make the switch to xLIB easier later on.

"So what do you have so far, Krid?"
  • Walking around (d'oh)
  • Random encounters with working battle(and you'll be getting a lot of these in this game)
  • A bunch of different maps
  • Stat sytem
  • More nice stuff, but I'm keeping that secret for now.
"What are you currently working on?
At the moment I'm recoding my shop, making the code a bit more efficient. Graphical wise it might be a tiny step back, but I should be able to make it nice enough.
I already have a monster db of 21 monsters, but you can't meet all of them in the game yet. This means I will have to create more maps... Which is quite tedious work with matrices..

Thanks for the attention and interest so far! Also I would be honored to chat with any of you in #tcpa or #omnimaga on EFnet, my nickname is the same.

Well, I hope my tutorials helped somehow... I think I state in that particular tutorial that I highly recommended strings anyways... But to each their own. :)smile.gif

Do you have any screenshots yet? How about a story line?

Your tutorial helped me out a whole lot, expect your name in the readme once I'm finished!

As for a story, I might add a small intro on a new game, but do not expect a real storyline or anything. What I'm working on should be compared to the games "Ragnarok Online" (PC) and "Shining Soul 2" (GBA). This means killing tons of monsters for exp and items, in order to become stronger and kill even more monsters.

Edit: Taking screenshots will be quite hard considering VTI crashes when I try to open the mem management menu (to archive the programs for Resource). I can't get pindurTI to work properly either :/ To take some shots I'll run my programs seperately on VTI, I guess. I want to clean up some things first, but you can expect the first shots fairly soon.

Well good. :)smile.gif I am glad to have been of some assistance. :Dbiggrin.gif

Ok... Well, you should create a reason to just going around killing all kinds of monsters... Maybe to kill off their Master or something?

When I do screenshots, I simply take a still image of where I press on... :)smile.gif Makes it a lil easier...

not even a real RPG and DEM probably won't be finished until January 2007.  Maybe even summer 2007.

Oh well, I'm sure Krid will do an awesome job.  I wish you luck!!

Sounds pretty cool, if you ever need any storyline help, I can probably help you out.  What kind of genre is this?  Fantasy?  SciFi?

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone! :)smile.gif

I have pindurTI working now (I think the problem was caused by different r0m versions), so expect screenshots later today.

The game will be in a fantasy setting.. Think Chain Mails and Swords :Dbiggrin.gif
