Explosions that Look Good
« on: July 26, 2011, 12:33:25 pm »
What explosions look really good in Axe Parser? Do you have a favorite explosion in a game that you've played where the explosion looked really cool? Do you prefer particle explosions, sprite explosions, or shock wave explosions?

I think you missed a type evident in both me and builderboy's original entries, which is like shockwave explosions but slightly different (this one is an example from my game):

I got bored of physics based games so I decided not to breed yet another one to the world.  And, I was too busy to finish, by the time I had to crack down if I was gonna win, I was working 50 hour weeks for my job in most cases, got sick twice, and got my calc stolen for a week once.

Screenies of second two types.

(Cube Runner)

There's actually two types of explosions in DS...it's pretty far into the screenie but it crops up eventually

Basically a particle explosion but with a sprite instead of a pixel, and the bits stick to the walls and such

Thanks. I don't remember Cube Runner looking quite like that...is it a TAS or just an old version?

That's an old version.  First screenie I found that had the explosion :P

Also iirc Blur (a contest entry last year) had a sprite explosion, except it didn't just fill in random data but it had a series of sprites.

If we're going to start talking about explosions, then we can't leave out the game that has probably 100 times more explosions than any other game.

Geometry Wars!! (Don't worry, I hacked it to start off this hard)

You can build a statue out of either 1'x1' blocks or 12'x12' blocks. The 1'x1' blocks will take a lot longer, but the final product is worth it.

Oh yeah, there *are* explosions in that game.  I can't tell most of the time, 'cause I'm just trying to stay alive. ;)

My high score is 12893. :D  Awesome game.

I like that game and Obstacle Snake because they both drop you straight into the game from the menu, which I think is pretty cool :)
