Lost projects
« on: July 28, 2010, 03:42:01 pm »
Well, when I got back from my two-week math camp, I found that my laptop's hard drive had died.

Yes, epic (hard drive) failure.

Unfortunately, this hard drive contained all of my TI-Nspire projects. It did not contain any z80 projects of importance other than the work-in-progress version of TI-Boy, which I had put on my flash drive anyway in case I had computer access at camp.

All recovery efforts have failed. Only about 1.3GB of the drive was recoverable, and I really doubt any of my projects are there.

But hey, now I have the chance to start anew. I'm planning on getting a new laptop, and perhaps I can actually set up a proper Nspire C development environment. I can probably code better now due to more experience. I think I'm going to be fine.  :)

That's good to hear. What Nspire projects were lost, though?

calc84, I was wondering if you are going to restart any of the projects you lost, like the Z80 and 68k emulators.  Likewise, good luck with your new projects that you can start now.  I hope everything will work out for you. :)

This is quite unfortunate :( Have you tried chilling the drive? Rumor has it that sticking it in a freezer for a day will help with the recovery.
I hope your new projects do well!
Just out of curiosity, which math camp was it?
EDIT: Typo ("day minutes" :P)

Oh that sucks, I'm sorry to hear it calc84 :/
One of my partitions has recently gone bad after resizing and moving them around, to give more space to windows because it needed more D: (I'm actually typing this from lynx, because I'm trying to recover said partition's data <_>)
I hope that at least one of your projects survived, if not I wish you the best of luck and hope that you continue your projects, no pressure of course :P

You guys should really use a handy online backup service, like Dropbox.

Sign up here: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTEwMTYzNDA5
(Yes, that's a referral link so I can get more space... :P But seriously, it's a decent service. You should definitely sign up.)
The best part is that it's 100% cross platform! :D (Even Linux!)

And of course, if you don't mind making something open source, you can use Google Code or Sourceforge (or other source code hosting websites)
to backup code.

============
That aside, I'm hoping you could also continue the Z80 emulator. It's definitely worth it to have an Nspire and a 99% TI-84 at the same time! :)
Also, couldn't you disassemble/decompile the ASM program?

Sad to hear that your interesting projects are set back by some amount of time...
I hope that next time, you'll make backups, on your Flash drive and elsewhere ;)

I am really sorry this happened, I know how it feels :(

For your new TI-Nspire projects, squalyl would probably be glad to to host them on his Subversion repository if you want. This is an easy solution to avoid such incidents.

What did you try on the drive? Was it making any strange noises, or was it just showing up as corrupted?

Have you tried it in another laptop, or using a 2.5" USB HDD enclosure?

What errors are you receiving and what tools have you used?

I am wondering that too

It sucks that this happened :(

I hate hardware failures or memory clears. You should do some backups somewhere safe, though, when you restart, in case.

Too bad... :( I normally use a flash drive, online service, or, for projects, a SVN repo
I hope you'll start them again, though. As for the 1.3 GB, yeah, it's probably just OS files x.x
Good luck starting again!

What is it with technology dying when it's not in constant use?

My main PC won't turn on anymore after I was away from it for 2 weeks and my dad's computer stopped sending picture to the monitor when he was away for a couple months while my grandma's laptop died while she was on a vacation for a few weeks.
Not to mention the hard drive failure of calc84.

I rarely even turn my laptop off anymore out of fear. At least I got an external hard drive for Christmas so I won't be losing any data... but computers are expensive and I can't do much with just a hard drive when this laptop dies. =/

My monitor was not in use for about a month, so now it takes anywhere from 2-5 minutes to turn on.  It also makes an increasing-in-pitch whistle that sounds like the blasted thing is about to explode
