Old board activity, community activity and new board stats thread
« on: September 26, 2008, 02:00:29 am »
This is a rough estimate of the monthly post stats on the old Omnimaga website. However it is not accurate since these stats found on webarchive.org starts around the 12 of each month and a lot of them, especially older ones and the temp board ones, were brought back from memory (Technically Feb 08 was the most inactive period, followed by Sept 05 then June 07. Jan 06, Apr 06 and Jan 07 were the most active ones). However it should give you a small idea of the evolution of the old board. Note that in July 2006 the stats are really innacurate though, as the entire link section of about 300 sites got deleted.

According to these numbers, the old Omnimaga website averaged at 20075 posts a year, 1673 a month and 55 a day. We were close or above the average from November 2005 to February 2007 and from July 2007 to December 2007.

Some facts:
-On the old site I always found out that when we had 1000 posts per month or above, we were good. Under that it meant inactivity.
-Starting early Feb 07 until early July 07, the reason why you see such a drastic drop in activity is because at that time I lost internet access at home and pretty much everyone else went inactive when I left. Through that time I had some rare occasions where I could get online at internet cafés though but the board nearly died late June 07.
-From March 07 to July 07 we got hit by a big wave of spambots, so much that we had to require admin validation of all accounts and on June 27th 2007, at 3:01 PM GMT-5, the large amount of bots crawling the board rose our "users online in the past 60 minutes" count to 491.
-After the old board closed on Jan 1st 08 there were requests for a temp board. It was active during the first 3 weeks then died. We got a small activity peak during a few days in the middle of February but it was short lived. The inactivity plus the repeated spam attacks by the anti-Omnimaga people you all heard about lead to the site closing.
-In July 2006 the entire website links section was officially taken down, which caused the total post count to drop by 300. This decision was made due to TI-Freakware having a similar link section, despite only TI, but this didn't made any difference because at that point most HP and Casio sites listed shutted down.

I am curious if after a couple of months we will be able to do this good again? I know the community is supposed to be less active since the past 2 years but it was common that UTI and Omnimaga were always the two most active TI forums since 2006 (UTI had the lead most of the time). Quite ironically, it still seems to be this way today, according to what I saw in the TI community

Last edit Jun 22th 2010: updated post count list. Seems a bit off now, with deleted bot posts, though... oh well. And It looks like we did not only got able to do as good as in 2006 again, but we shattered those records :P

Great stats, I'm sure when Omnimaga gets more members it will be that active again.

UTI is loosing with Omnimaga now, I think.

But UTI is the most complete forum in TI stuff. Has TI-BASIC math and more ASM than this forum. So I prefer to be more active there and 2nd Omnimaga.  :)

I think UTI is just going through an inactivity slump, right now. Sonic progresses so slowly, regular members aren't updating their projects much anymore and the only other progressing project seems to be Robot War. It will eventually pick up again and TI-Freakware will do the same as Pokémon starts progressing again. Omnimaga has remained active because there are so many projects currently progressing. Watch activity go down if most goes inactive at once O.O (this usually happens during summer)

quite a big contrast with the temporary board in February. I think the problem is that the entire staff including myself and members took the board backup restoration for granted and expected to be more active when we switch back, but it never happened so I guess everyone just gave up, because at the same time UTI/TIFW were still getting regular activity

I made an updated graph of the posting stats. November stats are incomplete, though, since month is incomplete. It will most likely be at least two hundred higher. I expect December to be very low, though, especially later in the month.

They are also avaliable at the forum stat page, with day by day posts, but it excludes the stats from the old board

EDIT: Updated graph Jan 28th 2010

After calculations, if the old board was restored, excluding the temporary Zetaboard, we would be over 70000 posts now. Lifetime, the total TI forum post counts (excluding Ticalc.org) are approximately the following (that takes in account possible deleted posts and database wipes):

Yaronet 68k board 300000* (2001)
United-TI 135000 (2003)
MaxCoderz 115000 (2002)
Cemetech 105000 (2004)

TICT board 90000 (2000)
Omnimaga 72500 (2005)
TI-Bank 72000 (2004)
TI-Gen 61000 (2004)
Calcgames 50000 (2001)
Detacheds 40000 (2002)

Yaronet z80 38000* (2002)
Tama Team 29000 (2007)
TI-Wereld 28000 (2007)
Revsoft 20000 (2004)
TI-Freakware 15000 (2005)
TICALCS.net 12700 (2004)
TI-BASIC Dev 11000 (2006)
Unsyntax 3200 (2006)
OTBP 2200 (2006)

*Until 2004, the z80 forum on Yaronet was hosted elsewhere and also covered 68K. In 2004, when the board was converted to yAronet format, all 68k topics were relocated to the alerady existing 68k forum there. This board now also includes the TI French Team forum.

This lists only contains the TI forums that are still up and had at least one human post since 2008.

Red = english TI websites with z80 stuff on them

There are some time put on collecting the statistics to us... Still it was curious to see the results. I didn't have an idea that yAronet was that big.

Actually, for most forums, it just involved checking the total post count. For the rest, it was easy to remember shut downs, hackings and crashes, because I have been around the TI community for over 8 years. But yeah, yAronet 68k forum always leaded the entire community, by far. TICT used to do so too but it kinda died in the past few years.

I am pretty sure that if we calculated the posts made in 2009 only for each of these boards, Omnimaga, United-TI and Cemetech would probably lead. Cemetech had a long period of inactivity earlier this year and for a short while this summer, though, so maybe TI-BANK would steal its top 3 spot.

It is amazing what you can find with a IRC log search engine. Here are, some posting stats from the old Omnimaga forums, the two most active periods on record:

January 7th - 2006 219
January 8th - 2006 227
January 9th - 2006 230
January 10th - 2006 245
January 11th - 2006 263
January 12th - 2006 184

April 20th - 2006 211
April 21st - 2006 240
April 22nd - 2006 184
April 23rd - 2006 181
April 24th - 2006 183
April 25th - 2006 139
April 26th - 2006 172
April 27th - 2006 207
April 28th - 2006 120
April 29th - 2006 230
April 30th - 2006 286
May 1st - 2006 194

These happened during the two months the forums hit 4000+ posts

However godamnit the userbase was spammish on IRC back then... (they were OK on forums, tho)
