Hmmmmm... I took a look at those websites, your parents seem to be pretty established in programming and nerd-dom themselves (or at least they say they are). I can't understand why they wouldn't want you programming. Any ideas why?

c.sprinkle, I hope it still is looking nice. It isn't cancelled, you know.  I don't think the community would ever forgive me for cancelling KnightOS. :P

No kidding :P

My parents are really easy on me, mainly because I'm the "good" son. One of my brothers is just plain crazy (literally, and not the funny kind :() and most of my childhood pain came from him. fortunately, my teenage years have remained fairly unaffected since he has either been in rehab (which was very unhelpful. Now he's smart and crazy, instead of stupid and crazy. Now I actually have some fears for the city of Logan) or now, living in another city :D

On calc stuff, my parents were mainly unhappy that I was causing others' grades to suffer :P shouldn't have taken that $5 to put games on that guy's calc. Now everybody begs me for them.

Are you the oldest child, Sir? it sounds like it, just because the more kids parents have, the more understanding they tend to be (except in certain cases, like where the older siblings were practically drug lords)

No, not again. D=

Sir, I'm reminded of your Mr. Coding Knight days.  I hope this does not escalate to those levels.

I really can't say anything mean about your parents - anything I say will not help your cause any, especially if your parents read it.  Furthermore, I wish that you and your parents could just get along.  I'm sure you've asked this, but we've never gotten an answer on Omni: Why do you parents discourage calc development?  If you can answer this, I'm fairly certain that everyone at Omni will be able to see your situation more clearly.

Stay strong, and try not to fight with them too much.

P.S.  I can't wait for KOS. :D

Ah, yes, I remember that post. Quite a sad story, actually. Honestly, I currently feel like I shouldn't do anything, at risk of making you look worse. If you have suggestions I'd be happy to help, but probably the best thing for me to do is stay out of it for now.

That sucks, although I laughed at Qazz's comment.

Wow, it almost sounds like where I'm headed. My parents want me to be as perfect as possible, anything they don't like about what I do, they forbid it. I've tried reasonable conversations too, but they never consider what I say, for the most part these conversations end up being shouting matches, most of them ending with them unable to give a reasonable response "We are your parents, you HAVE to do what we say. This is coming from the people that say "you always have a choice." What kind of Bullshit is that? Now when they say "would you like to...." or "Do you want to...." the only reply that their happy with is something along the lines of "your wish is my command." kind of thing, if I reply with the obvious truth "Don't bother asking because no matter what I say you'll go ahead and make me do whatever you want anyways." they get pissed and yell at me. I've been trying to find ways to cope with my home situation by finding things to do to take my mind off of it, but each time they seem to be purposely attempting to break down anyway I have of coping. Games:Banned, TV:Banned, Computer(for personal use):Banned, Free Will:Banned, i wouldn't be surprised if soon I am banned from playing tennis too. The one thing I've found that my parents can't affect, is one of my close friends who is currently planning on dropping out of the IB program and transferring to another school because of her grades. I know that she can do better, but when I tried to help motivate her, she just lashed back and told me I was a hypocrite because I never do my math homework. She has refused to talk to me again until January 29. Slowly all my methods of coping are being destroyed, and the new ones that I find are less and less effective. I've lost the reason that I had to do well, I've even forgotten that reason now.

My parents tried to do that when I was younger, but they quickly realized that I'm one of the most stubborn people on the planet (my longest argument with someone lasted 23 hours before they gave up) and they weren't always around. If I didn't care about grades or something, nothing they were going to do would change that. And believe me, they tried everything from stern talks, to psychiatrists (to figure out why I was an oddball who didn't care about grades), to threatening me with boot camp (which almost worked).

The psychiatrists were the most fun, because you could lead them all over and they'd read a whole bunch of stuff into it  ;D

Anyway, I hope you can resolve it Sir.

Wow, that sucks SIr (I missed this thread), same for you Guy.  My parents have always been supportive of my ability to program stuff ("OMG, YOU CAN PROGRAM!")  My mom has only taken my calc away once or twice, once was when I was up at 12ish working on some project, and another was when I first got it I think.  I hope things get better for you SIr and Guy, good luck!

Indeed, I wish some parents had more compassion. I hate the mentality of parents where they do not let kids pursue what goal they want even if the goals are great. Some parents still live in the 1950s, where, as kid, you were forced to major in what your parents decided and even forced to marry with who they want.

Thank you all for the support.  It isn't as bad now as it was when I wrote that post, though.  I'm just not allowed to use my TI-84+ for anything other than math, and my parents are a lot more watchful of me on the computer (which I spend much more time on than they want me to).  I'll buy my own 84+ soon, which they can't influence.  I also have a laptop I bought myself.

I hope they don't use the excuse that you live in their property and they can dictate everything, though, if you buy a calc. I worry that they might still take it away with that excuse X.x, even if you decided to pay a rent and the Internet bill. I mean, when my mom thought I spent too much time online, she cancelled my internet plan even though I paid half of it and did not allow me to get it back even if I decided to pay all of it. I even paid a small rent every month and still saw my internet access cancelled.
