TI NSpire CX Buttons
« on: February 28, 2011, 07:27:45 am »
One of the updates to the NSpire CX were soft buttons. I was one of the ones who first thought 'Woah, soft buttons, awesome!'.

But now that I think about it with my TV remote on my desk, I can see that soft buttons are terrible for calculators. What I like about the 83+Series buttons is that they are like PS2 remote's buttons, easy to click and allow super fast clicking (I type and use a calculator really fast). Soft buttons don't really allow that.

So do you think they are any good?

I think they will get destroyed easily. I know my remote buttons constantly fall off/rip. It also take a speed reduction. all you extremely fast typers on calculators will not be able to do that now. (I'm not overly fast).  the only good thing about them is that they add a relatively good feel to the keypad as you type

The advantage is not enough to outweigh the disadvantages for me :S

If they are indeed soft, I see this as a negative. I think that would definitely make them much less durable. More prone to damage, and lettering wearing off. Maybe I'm wrong though, and they used a really awesome material. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Indeed, soft buttons may be fragile...

As someone already stated, text weares off quickly, I think they are not very fragile, though.

They will break very easily if something even slightly sharp hits them very hard.
the case might be enough tho start a cut. I wish they chose to keep the old keys

If the buttons aren't made like the ones on flexible keyboards, then it will be a disadvantage.

Especially if the edges are sharp instead of round. My Casio FX-7000G has soft buttons and I can't put any calc on top of it, otherwise I risk tearing them apart if I move the other calc horizontally.

I personally would not like them either, because it's much slower to type.

As for text that wears off, this happened on my old 83+ too, though.

I don't really mind, I won't destroy the key since it doesn't have a slide case, and I don't need the lettering.  ;)

Lol but if you get the calc used on Ebay you would have an hard time getting used to it if there was nothing written on the keys. O.O

Yeah I don't remember if it's in his topic, in his interview or one of the news, but someone confirmed the buttons wouldn't be soft. I'm happy about this.
